With the first days of the semester here once again, we've compiled resources to help you get off to a great start. A reminder to instructors that the CTE is here to support you. We're happy to meet with you to discuss your teaching, curriculum work, scholarship of teaching and learning project, and much more. If you're interested, we encourage you to schedule a confidential consultation by the priority deadline: Friday, January 17.

Contemplative Sciences Center's Karolyn Kinane will lead a book discussion of Contemplative Practices in Higher Education: Powerful Methods to Transform Teaching and Learning by Daniel P. Barbezat and Mirabai Bush. This book provides an introduction to how contemplative practices are being used in various university classrooms across disciplines and programs.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: We are accepting proposals for our CTE-Supported Curriculum (Re)Design Grants until Monday, February 10. Any UVA unit responsible for a credit-bearing curriculum is eligible to apply. Successful applicants will receive personalized support from an experienced CTE-led team and up to $15,000 in funds toward curriculum design efforts.

UVA Acts - Inclusive Teaching Toolkit: Lectures

In this interactive performance, you'll hear stories from Gene, Tori, and Claire about their experiences with belonging and belonging uncertainty in their education. Consider how small changes and psychosocial interventions during lectures can allow students to feel they belong in your classroom, at UVA, and in your field of research—and learn why belonging matters in the first place.

UVA Acts - Inclusive Teaching Toolkit: Small Groups

Kai, Meg, and Cassidy are starting their group project together, but there are problems from the beginning. In this workshop, learn how transparent assignments and groupwork facilitation can prevent interpersonal issues and provide a more inclusive working environment for all students.

Connecting Lives, Opening Hearts: Community-Engaged Teaching
Monday, March 23 | 4:30 PM
Newcomb Theatre


This special event is focused on the transformative power of community-engaged teaching. The evening will feature a screening of the documentary Seats at the Tablewhich is based on UVA's Books Behind Bars program. Panel discussion and reception to follow.
This event is sponsored by the Office of the President, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, Center for Teaching Excellence, and College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
The CTE will host two summer sessions of our Course Design Institute: May 18-22 and June 1-5. During CDI, you will design or substantially redesign a course built on learner-centered principles. We will begin accepting applications late February, with a deadline of Monday, April 6.

We will also begin accepting applications mid-spring for our Ignite program, which provides instructors with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to develop into exceptional teachers. More details coming soon.

CTE TEAM NEWS

Associate Professor Andrew (Andy) Kaufman has joined our team! He will serve as our Assistant Director of Community-Engaged Learning Initiatives. Andy is the creator of Books Behind Bars, a program that has UVA students lead discussions about classical literature with students at Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center. In his new role, Andy aims to highlight community-engaged teaching at UVA, inspire others to engage in this kind of work, and support their efforts.
