Your Foundation had a very successful year thanks to each of you. Your contributions supported emerging leaders through scholarships and celebrated masters in our industry through the Legends program. As we close out 2019, we want to highlight the Foundation’s successes as well as our aspirations for 2020. To help your Foundation reach these goals on behalf of the Academy, we encourage you to make your annual donation in January when you are asked to pay your annual dues.
Fundraising
The 2019 Foundation Campaign Committee of Cindi Wight, Michael Kalvort, Tom Shuster and Mark Young set a goal to raise $10,000 from 100 active Academy members, along with an aspirational goal of 100% participation for active Academy Members and 75% participation from Emeritus Members. The Foundation exceeded this goal, raising $10,813 from 118 member’s donations. This is a 25% increase in the amount raised and a 39% increase in donors compared to 2018! The average contribution is just slightly under $100. We want to thank every member of the Academy for their donation, and we know we can do better.
The 2020 Foundation Campaign Committee will be expanded, welcoming Chris Nunes. The 2020 goal is to raise $12,000 from 125 Active Academy members. We know with your support we can reach this goal, while we still aspire to have 100% participation from active Academy Members and 75% participation from Emeritus Members.
John C. Potts Leadership Development Scholarship, aka the “Pottsie” Scholarship
The 2019 Pottsie Scholarship Committee chaired by Mark Young also included Renée Bahl, Chris Dropinski and John Potts. Thanks to your donations, we continue to support two emerging leaders each year to attend the NRPA Directors School. This year we focused on applicants whose agencies did not have the financial means to send them. Those of you who attended the Academy’s annual meeting in Baltimore met rock star and Pottsie scholarship recipient Monique Breaux from Marble Falls, Texas. Our other awardee and future leader was Adrienne Lacy from Marinette, Wisconsin. One thing we can do as Academy members and professionals is pay it forward to be sure our legacies include building future leaders. This scholarship is one way we can reach this goal.
The 2020 Pottsie Scholarship Committee will be expanded to welcome Cindi Wight. Applications for the 2020 Directors School are due March 25, 2020.
Legends Video Series Project
With previous funding from the Foundation, the first eight topical videos have been completed and may be accessed through the Academy website. Four more videos are to be completed with $5,000 in funding to be raised through the Academy Legends Committee. The Legends effort was led by Chris Dropinski, and Bill Nelson joined in late 2019. Please take the time to view these videos, they are very well done.
Thank You
On behalf of the Foundation Board, thank you again for a successful year. We look forward to making 2020 an even better one for professional development in parks and recreation.
