Dear Friend,
Happy Holidays! Today we reflect with pride on 2019 while looking forward to an impactful 2020. Here are some of our accomplishments this year:
  • More than 1000 students learned essential independence skills such as using a white cane, technology classes and braille.

  • Blind jobseekers in Employment Immersion gained critical skills needed to land a job in the competitive workforce—a crucial program when nearly 56% of working-age, blind adults are unemployed.

  • Enchanted Hills Camp for the Blind hosted ten different summer camp sessions including our largest ever teen camp session.

  • The LightHouse Media and Accessible Design Lab (MAD Lab) produced 30,000 pages of Braille, 2000 TMAPs (tactile maps) and partnered with close to 100 businesses and organizations.

  • Holman Prize for Blind Ambition 2018 winners broke down barriers: Conchita Hernandez led a blindness training in Mexico for blind kids and their families; Stacy Cervenka started the Blind Travelers Network, an online forum for people who are blind to review and discuss destinations; and Red Szell completed an extreme triathlon culminating in climbing Am Buachaille, a sea stack rising from the ocean off the coast of Scotland.

  • Our Health and Wellness Program provided more than 250 hours of activities including: wellness retreats, aerial arts classes, nutrition counseling and more.

  • Customers bought more than 6,500 low vision and blindness products at our unique retail store, Adaptations. Adaptations is now online!

  • LightHouse partnered with the Bay Area KQED podcast "The World According to Sound" to take listeners on an audio exploration of the lives of dozens of blind Californians.

  • The award winning news broadcast program "60 Minutes" featured LightHouse Board President Chris Downey, as he celebrated his 10-year anniversary since becoming blind and his journey to regaining his confidence as a blind architect.
Generous and kind people like you are why LightHouse has been able to offer transformative experiences for people who are blind for 117 years. Your meaningful contribution will have far-reaching benefits for our students and campers in 2020.
