War. Concentration camps. Genocide. Forced relocation from homelands. Prohibition and destruction of cultural practices. These experiences – historical traumas, shared in community, can produce emotional and psychological wounds that are carried across generations. Collective accumulated wounding across generations, even those who have not directly experienced the trauma can feel the effects of it years later.
Historical trauma is perpetuated today, from how we articulate our identity, to our relationships with our families, to our standing in mainstream society.
Connection to culture and community can heal these wounds. Reconnecting people to the power of their cultures, empowering them to organize with their community, and creating new narratives can have healing effects for those experiencing historical trauma.
Join NAPAWF*NYC for our final Study Group of the year, where we explore the different traumas of our diasporas and connect with one another so we can go beyond the pain of our past and mobilize power for the future.
