A Blanket of Snow
We're less than a week until the official first day of Winter... and apparently Mother Nature didn't get the memo. Aberdeen residents awoke from their warm beds to a blanket of snow and closed schools. While the first true snow of the season is a magical time, it's important to remember to take things slower. Wake up with extra time to defrost your car's windshield and warm the engine. Drive slow and purposefully on your morning commute. Walk delicately on untreated sidewalks and remember that wet spots may actually be black ice. Life goes on in Aberdeen... even in the frigid days of Winter. But with a little care and caution, we'll all get to where we're going safely!
We've had a blast keeping you informed this year with all the magnificent activities, events and news in Aberdeen.  Next week will be our final edition of the decade: a special look back to some of this year's accomplishments in the City! Stay tuned for that and we'll see you in the new year (and decade)!
Aberdeen Travels the World
Thanks for staying toasty with us at Aberdeen's first-ever 'Christmas Around the World' event! Residents enjoyed a beautifully sunny day shopping (and eating!) local in downtown Aberdeen around our signature Christmas Tree. When the sun went down, patrons stayed warm as they sipped on delicious hot chocolate, indulged in free s'mores, and huddled around the fire. We hope you enjoyed this festive event in our winter wonderland!
Ugly Sweater Competition
Your City of Aberdeen staff participated in some friendly competition last week. You're looking at Aberdeen's 2019 'Ugly Christmas Sweater' award winner, Mrs. Tara Bell, from the Department of Public Works. Arms wrapped in silver garland, Tara's sweater features a festive pup going through a lit holiday wreath (and the sweater itself!) This naughty pup even chowed-down on a sample of tinsel! Thank you to all who participated... we promise we were laughing with you.
Shop With A Cop 2019
The American Legion Bernard L. Tobin Post 128 and Aberdeen Police Department held its annual Shop with a Cop Saturday. Community kids were selected by a variety of organizations. Shop with a Cop is made possible by citizens or business owners who make a donation to the program which is overseen by the legion. Thank you to Walmart for hosting this community based program. Labella Pet Boutique Open!
We had the privilege this December of welcoming Aberdeen's newest business to our downtown: Labella Pet Boutique. Located on 33 North Parke St, Labella is a full-service pet grooming center, which includes bathing, hair trimming, nail clipping and more! Stop by this wonderful new business for information on dog training and some pet treats too!
Patriotic Employer Award
APD's Lt. Reiber and Cpl Jansen were honored with the Patriotic Employer Award. OFC Danielle Baust, whose husband is a soldier with the Army National Guard, nominated her two supervisors for their kindness and understanding while she faces the challenges of working long hours and caring for three children during her husband's deployment.
Innovative 'Smart Water' Tech Arrives in Aberdeen
Our Aberdeen Walmart is one of only four locations to partner with the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) to utilize "advanced stormwater control technology that can help reduce pollutants and curb local flooding" of the Chesapeake Bay [¹]. This "Smart Pond" technology utilizes sensors to monitor water levels of ponds and allows for preemptive (remote) drainage prior to a storm. This first-of-its-kind private-public partnership showcases how innovation and teamwork continue to make Aberdeen prosper.
