Too often, we know what we need to do, but we make excuses. We are like old dogs who refuse to learn new tricks.
Issue #39 - December 2019
See the Path, Set the Path
December is a time to reflect on wins, losses, challenges, changes, progress and vision.
If we don't start with reflection, how can we know we are setting the right priorities for the New Year?
Carve out time in your calendar, and respect the time you have set aside, to channel your energies and create a sustained reflection and vision for what lies ahead.
You may call this free time “ME TIME” or something else altogether. The important thing is to give yourself permission and a safe space to decompress and recharge without interruptions.
Give yourself permission and a safe space to decompress and recharge.
Hint: If your office is not that space,
try a conference room, coffee shop, kitchen table or mountaintop.
We often don’t give ourselves this permission because we believe that we need to be “productive” every minute of the day. Yet if we take a step back, we realize that we can be much more productive if we can dig in deep and understand the essence of what we are trying to create with our time rather than simply rushing to fill it.
If you already know that but are just not feeling or believing it, you might say, “Anne Marie, that’s great, but who has time for that?” And I would answer, “leaders make time.”
Be more productive by focusing on outcomes, not productivity.
Leadership is one of the top qualities that will drive success in your career, and you cannot be a leader by simply doing. Leaders need to see the path and set the path. How can you if you are constantly in the weeds?
As my yoga teachers are fond of saying, energy follows attention. Take the time to discern where your attention will serve you most - at a higher level or down to the granular details as needed - and you will find the energy to bring your plans into action.
