The Power of Showing Up

Dear Friends,

All of us here at Mission Shawnee would like to say thank you for the numerous ways you have shown your support this year to help children in our community grow and know the love of God. By God's grace and through your giving, prayers, and service we have seen a year unlike any other in the history of our organization.

Your generosity has paved the way for hundreds of children to receive weekly 1-on-1 attention from a caring mentor to help them navigate through difficult life situations. Your support has given countless children an extra boost of confidence as they sit with a mentor and finally nail the reading or math skill they have been practicing for weeks.. Your care for this organization allowed over 100 children per day this summer to receive a healthy, nutritious lunch and hear of the love that God has for them.

Looking back on 2019, it is clear that God's hand has been at work through Mission Shawnee and the Adopt A School Initiative. As this year comes to an end, we ask that you would prayerfully consider giving to support Mission Shawnee financially. There still remains much work to be done in our city and within our organization. Your generosity is crucial to the success and continuation of the work that is taking place at Mission Shawnee.

SUMMIT MENTORING PROGRAM

How have you been shaped by those who have shown up in your life? For many of us, we can look back and point out those who had a profound impact on our life and helped shape who we are today. Something we preach consistently to our mentors is that your presence carries more power than you realize. Just by showing up for a child every week, you begin to tell that child that they matter and are important in your life. For many children that attend our afterschool mentoring program, that is a truth they need to be constantly reminded about.

"I’ve gotten to see a lot of my mentees heart for others and how interested she is in wanting to know Jesus. She has gotten very comfortable sharing her anxieties with me and things that have been bringing her down. We always have a good time talking about ourselves and the lesson and uplifting one another!!"

Through the Summit, we hope to provide children with the opportunity to grow spiritually, academically, and emotionally. As our mentors have shown up each week and built trust with their mentees, we have seen walls come down and relationships deepen. We have witnessed children becoming more aware of the gospel and who Jesus is. We have seen attitudes and perspectives become brighter. All because someone is showing up in their life and speaking truth into them.

As we wrap up 2019, how you can show up for someone in need? We all need people who are willing to be present with us in what we are going through in life and we can all be that for someone else.
