TREK TALK DECEMBER  2019

Nepal "must do trek"

Last month I returned from another adventure trip to Nepal. It was my first visit to Tsum Valley which is one of world's remotest Himalayan Valleys and a restricted region until recently. The trek to Tsum Valley was challenging, walking some days between 9-10 hours, with the longest being 13 hours when we crossed the Larkya La (5160 m) pass being the longest pass in Nepal and situated on the Manaslu circuit trek. It was my 3rd time crossing this pass and although challenging it was extremely rewarding, taking in the majestic surroundings of the Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Boudha Himal ranges.

The Tsum Region once being part of Tibet looks completely different from what you will find elsewhere. The people of Tsum Valley or the Tsumbas belong to Tibetan origin with their own ancient form of dialect, art, culture and religion. Very few adventure travelers have made it to this high and mysterious valley, which used to be an important trade link with Tibet. The region is still less exposed in comparison to other touristy areas, with relatively virgin and less beaten paths in comparison to the Everest and Annapurna area.

So, if you have been to Nepal and wish to return to do a more challenging off the beaten track trek then I totally recommend Tsum Valley (moderate) or both Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit. (challenging)..

Saraswati School Nepal

Here is the latest news on our school project in Nepal. In October I again had the pleasure of visiting our school in Nepal to see how the  school, teachers and children were getting along. It is hard to believe that it was 4-1/2 years since that the massive earthquake hit Nepal and thousands of lives were lost, homes and school destroyed. Saraswati Primary School situated in a remote area of North/West Nepal was destroyed like hundreds of schools in Nepal. With the help of family, friends, and your kind donations of money and hard labor we were able to not only rebuild Saraswati Public School, but also 2 neighboring to school rebuild.

During our trek lastmonth we had the pleasure of visiting Maguwa village to see how the students and teachers were getting along. With the generous assistance from Lindfield East Public School in Sydney we are able to continue the support to Saraswati Public School by providing them with stationery, whiteboards, carpet, chairs, tables, any necessary items required. At todays count there are now 45 students ageing from 3 to 12 years, they are all very happy and healthy children without a care in the world. They are happy to play jacks with stones, pick up sticks with hay, and only last month they got electricity in the village. Maybe one day in the future they will have internet and computers. Mhhr! Not sure if that is a good idea.
