Holiday Greetings from Knappton Cove!

Friends of Knappton Cove, we are so very grateful for all of you who have generously donated to our cause and for those considering making year-end gifts. Your support and encouragement have allowed us to pursue our mission to preserve, interpret and promote the history of the US Columbia River Quarantine Station. Our vision statement charges us to " increase public awareness of this National Historic Site, obtain and maintain artifacts, promote historic preservation and provide public education and interpretation of the layers of history." With your help, we are doing just that.

Our newsletter this year highlights a wonderful original salmon label (circa 1882) recently donated by Pete Wyman. It came from the granddaughter of Dr. Baylis Earle, Assistant Surgeon General, who was in charge of this Quarantine Station shortly after it was converted from a cannery facility (1900). We assume he may have found this label on site when he took command of the Station. This generous donation was a delightful surprise that reminded us how the layers of history are woven together, telling us the stories of Knappton Cove.

As I was playing with putting an elf hat on the salmon label for a Christmas greeting, I remembered my grandfather's Christmas salmon gift label which was quite charming in its simplicity. He owned and operated the Knappton Cove Camp (sport fishing camp & moorage) here in the 1950's. The stick figures show my grandmother and mother canning while the men did the fishing and cleaning. Right there, you can see a common thread of three layers of history here at the Cove.

Thank you for helping us keep the history and the stories of the people who came before us from being forgotten! Your donations directly support our ability to offer new opportunities and events that allow us to share the stories of Knappton Cove with you.

Wishing you a Holiday of Good Cheer and Good Health!
