Colorado Street Bridge, Pasadena

More than 150 people have jumped to their deaths from Pasadena's Colorado Street Bridge. A chainlink fence was installed as a temporary, preventative measure in 2018, and this year there has been only one suicide from the bridge. Soon there may be none because will begin in 2020 on a permanent suicide barrier. Some residents have expressed opposition to the barrier while acknowleging that it's necessary. "I hate them all," said one commissioner of the proposed designs, "and I hate the cause for it. That's what I hate the most."
New River Gorge Bridge, West VA

In West Virginia, at least 22 people have died jumping from the New River Gorge Bridge since it opened in 1977. The widower of a woman who suffered from depression, recently lost her job, and jumped is claiming that the state needs to do more to prevent suicides from bridges. He says that highway officials have not taken proper precautions to make bridges safe by installing suicide barriers. He filed his claim with the West Virginia Claims Commission this month, and the West Virigina Division of Highways is now considering options.
Newport Bridges, Rhode Island

In Newport County, Rhode Island, there have been 27 suicides from 2010 to 2018 on three bridges: the Mount Hope Bridge, pictured at right (12), the Pell Bridge (9), and the Jamestown Bridge (6). According to officials with the state Turnpike and Bridge Authority, options such as netting and fencing are being considered, but they would need to be proceeded by engineering studies that include load and wind analysis, and these haven't been initiated yet. To date, prevention efforts consist of signs on each bridge with the hotline number of Samaritans of Rhode Island.
Rail Suicides in Pennsylvania

There were 825 deaths on railroad and subway systems nationwide in 2018, acording to the Philadelphia Inquirer, and half were suicides. "It would be no exaggeration to call this data a picture of a public health crisis," the paper noted in an editorial, "not only encompassing those troubled enough to end their lives but the pain and grief of those left behind, including the rail engineers involved in these fatal accidents." Nearly half of all train engineers reported that they had operated a train that killed someone on the tracks.
