Joybird, Hyde Park Adelaide

Hello travellers,

All you wanted for Christmas including strikes

Looks like turbulence ahead in the pilot, crew and baggage handling department for Jetstar patrons over this yuletide period. Jetstar have timed a few 4 hour stoppages, so check delays. I had a personal experience with this low-cost airline some years ago, which I would still prefer not to talk about. As a result, it's off my airline list. However, I have revisited my decision to withdraw my patronage of this airline several times, but each time I found on completing the tedious booking process, including all desired options, I'm basically at the same cost as a Red e-Deal fare on their Qantas parent.

What happened last week?

I went to Joybird in Adelaide for a delightful lunch olast week. You can see some pictures and a few observations on this excellent addition to the Hyde Park shopping strip.

Virgin has rejigged its Australia/USA flights for heavy maintenance, but in my opinion it might end up really being a capacity cut. On the other hand, Qantas has been looking at improving some frequent flyer benefits outside its qualifying status ladder. We know this, as they have been surveying some of their patrons with a variety of options. I also had a look at the digital development Qantas flagged in its recent presentation to investors. It doesn't stop at facial recognition! Oh yes, and Qantas opened a first class lounge in Singapore.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission released their final report into Customer loyalty schemes and had some pithy words to say about both Qantas and Virgin's schemes.

What's coming up?

OK, the Hotel reviews got delayed  . . . again. This week, I promise - again.

Having booked fares to New York for 2020, I'm going to start the planning process, including: what to do in NYC; where to stay; sailing around the Carribean; and maybe visiting the south of the USA. Reader contributions and observations gratefully accepted.

Not much actual travelling next week, but I will work on keeping you up to date on the world of travel and flying.

You can catch up on posts from last week below. Until next week . . .

Happy Travels,

2PAXfly

Virgin Australia: Cuts LA flights – heavy maintenance, or capacity redux?

By 2paxfly on Dec 06, 2019 08:00 am

Et is reporting that Virgin Australia is reducing flights from Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney to Los Angeles due to scheduled heavy maintenance for their Boeing 777 fleet. Heavy maintenance is determined by the usage of the aircraft, a combination of miles flown, and landings and takeoffs. So it can be predicted well in advance on […]

Food: Joybird, Hyde Park, Adelaide – the local chook shop you always wanted

By 2paxfly on Dec 05, 2019 05:00 am

As I have told you all before, I travel to Adelaide, South Australia regular to catch up with my family. I was there last week and decided to try a restaurant that opened recently. This re-imagining of a local chicken shop has a great pedigree, being the brainchild of Adam Liston of Adelaide’s premier Japanese […]

OneWorld: Alliance wide upgrades?

By 2paxfly on Dec 04, 2019 10:53 am

During November Qantas has been quietly surveying some of its frequent flyers to see if they would like to be able to use their Qantas Frequent Flyer points to upgrade on any OneWorld airline. That would mean you could use your Qantas points to upgrade on the likes of American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, […]

Loyalty Schemes: ACCC provides its final report

By 2paxfly on Dec 04, 2019 08:00 am

We reported earlier this year on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s observations about Airline’s obedience to Australian Consumer Law. Now the ACCC has released its final report on Loyalty programs – including the two biggest loyalty programs in Australia, which are both run by Airlines: Qantas Frequent Flyer and Virgin Australia’s Velocity program. Priority […]

Qantas: Singapore First Lounge opens officially

By 2paxfly on Dec 03, 2019 10:09 am

Well, we have been promised this particular lounge for a while. It had a soft opening a week or so ago, and now its official opening yesterday 2 December. There’s not a lot of news here, but there are actual images (rather than renders) of the 1,000 sqm of First Lounge, which has a capacity […]

Qantas: Investor Day Presentation 2019 #4 – Innovation, Profit and Cost reduction

By 2paxfly on Dec 03, 2019 08:00 am

Qantas presented to its investors on 19 November 2019, and its share price shot up a little over 2 per cent to AU$7:10. That was despite signalling a slowing economy, both domestic and global. But maybe it was in reaction to a promise to improve Qantas’s domestic operational performance from 12 to 18 per cent […]
