Impacted in One Way: Jesus

By High School Student Grace Wan

Note: Dalat high school students can participate in Impact trips, which allow them to serve, learn from, and engage with people of other cultures.

Bandung, Indonesia: the week-long home for fourteen students gifted with the ability to weave the upbeat chorus of One Way, Jesus into any song on earth.

As these students spent their fall break on the service-learning trip known as Impact, spontaneous karaoke sessions were not the only thing they enjoyed. Through activities such as hiking with the local youth, playing soccer with kids, visiting women and juvenile boys’ prisons, farming, and visiting Rumah Ruth (a shelter with babies up for adoption), the Impact team wove their anthem ‘One Way’ into all they did, loving and living for Jesus.

Jesus’ transformational power was evident in the small yet significant acts of service the team carried out - one of which was holding babies who often didn’t receive as much love and attention as they needed. Although these acts were small, they were still important pieces that fit a larger puzzle that the team grew to understand more and more, as time went by.

As Joseph Chandra (Grade 12) said, “Prior to going to Rumah Ruth, I didn’t really understand what the big deal was about small people (babies), but when I held one of the two-month-old babies, it was like that scene in The Grinch where my heart grew like 3 sizes bigger. ”

It’s true that those babies, as well as many other people, impacted each member of the Impact team, allowing the team to understand what it means to love others as God loves us. Whether goofing off with kids or listening to the stories of people from various backgrounds, these many relational acts of service connected the Impact team with everyone they came across; connecting them in ways so powerful that they could have only been the result of Jesus’ hand at work.

Dalat Visits in Minneapolis and Chicago
April 5–19, 2020

Alumni living in or around Illinois and Minnesota may be interested in getting together in April with other alum and Development Director Cheryl Franceschi, visiting from Penang. Alumni are organizing several gatherings in and around metro Minneapolis at Crown College and other possibly more locations. Wheaton College outside Chicago is also planned as a reunion location, but specific dates/times are still being arranged.

If you can host a small gathering at your home, please let us know so we can include you in the plans! Email Cheryl Franceschi with possible date and location to cfranceschi@dalat.org.

Light Up the Eyes of Our Students in 2019

Families, staff, alumni, and friends give generously each year to fund improvements like new playgrounds, fitness and sports equipment, service trips and outreach, computers and learning technology, special learning services, music and drama…and much more that enriches education for our students.

Whether you are able to give big or small, every gift impacts a life and benefits students for a lifetime—why not partner with us as we focus on building great futures, with great generosity!

Help us light up the eyes of our students this year by participating in the Annual Fund on Fundly.

Dalat Flashback: 2005

From the 2005 Reflector: Grinning with great delight, Than Matanick disrupts David Robertson and Eric Westergren from their homework for a friendly little chat by the lockers one afternoon.

Do you have a flashback photo you’d like to share? Send it our way and we’ll post it in the next newsletter.

Saving Dalat’s Rich History for Future Generations

You may already know that a team at Dalat, led by longtime staff member Jacki Steinkamp, is putting the details in place for a Legacy Wall illustrated timeline that will adorn the outside of Dalat’s Harbor Hall. The team also realized that our school needs a place to keep important memorabilia that helps us remember and understand who we are through those who came before us. To that end, a large unit of wall cabinets will be installed in an interior conference room to safely store and display photos, books and dimensional items and mementos representing Dalat’s rich history.

Do you have items from your time at Dalat that you could give the school to safely keep and display? We would love to have those items that have meaning to you and would also be of interest to others. We will cherish and care for your memories, while sharing them with students and staff for years to come. Please contact us at alumni@dalat.org to let us know what you have and make arrangements for receiving them from you. Many thanks!.

Welcome Back to Dalat, Alumni and Friends!

Employment Opportunities With Dalat in 2020

"The physicists say that I am a mathematician, and the mathematicians say that I am a physicist. Whatever I am, I do know that Dalat International School is in need of a math teacher in 2020." - Albert Einstein

We have exciting positions open for High School Math (and more) next year—so, after you've experimented with tensor calculus, fiddled with Riemannian geometry, and giggled about Euclid’s fifth postulate, why not take a look at this link.
