Screen time guidance for Parents and Carers

Screen time can be a source of tension for families. We all use screens for entertainment, information and to connect with others, so how can we prevent this time from becoming unhealthy? Childnet has produced this excellent guidance for parents and carers to 'help children get off to a good start using digital devices'.

They say, the most important tips are:
  1. Use digital devices together with your child
  2. Think through the rules you want to set for media and technology use at home
  3. Learn more about services, content, technology and age ratings
  4. Teach children good internet habits early on – you are their most important role model!

Updated ActiveBYTES planning

All Spring Term ActiveBYTE lesson plans for 'I am safe and secure' will be updated for the start of next term. Links will be checked and other updates made.

Some plans have been completely rewritten and there are minor changes to many of the plans, so please let colleagues know to use the new version from the ActiveBYTE webpage rather than a plan they may have downloaded last year.

We have also produced alternative assemblies for schools that may have used the KS1 and KS2 spring assemblies last year.

New Data and Privacy Toolkit for Young People

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has released a toolkit for secondary aged pupils to help them understand how their data is being stored and used online.

The resources cover aspects such as who is collecting data, what can go wrong, how to protect privacy online and children's rights. The toolkit, which was developed using the views of young people themselves. contains information to read as well as videos and games and can be accessed for free at:

Online Sexual Harm:
Children and Young People's Views

A new report from The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA), has been published, highlighting young people's views. Key findings of the report include 90% of respondents believing that it is their own responsibility to keep themselves safe online and many children tending to accept the risk of being exposed to sexual harm as a ‘normal part’ of being online.

Principal researcher Laura Pope said:

“It is clear that overly simplistic and negative messages around online safety are unhelpful, and conflict with the realities of children’s online lives.

“Instead, they need more support and education from schools before they start spending time online, as well as parents, carers and the online industry, so they no longer feel that it is their responsibility to protect themselves from online sexual harm.”
