Winter Watering, Your Questions Answered

Since we’ve been recommending no watering and asking folks to turn their sprinkler systems off, we’ve received a lot of questions about watering in the winter. So, for all of you who have wondered, but didn’t reach out, here are a couple of things we you should know…

Watering in cold temperatures doesn’t benefit most plants as they are dormant or “hibernating” and not taking up water during the winter season. Learn more about winter watering here.

According to the Water Management Planwatering in temperatures below 40oF is prohibited and could result in a water waste violation. One reason for this is that watering near the freezing point often creates slippery and dangerous conditions on sidewalks and roads; potentially causing injury to yourself, or a neighbor passing by.

Homes in Frisco (2005 and newer) are equipped with automatic rain and freeze shut-off sensors. Rain and freeze shut-off sensors turn off an irrigation system when either a significant amount of rain is measured, or temperatures dip below a certain point.

Many rain sensors on the market are programmed to shut a system off after measuring a quarter-inch of rain. This may mean that your system will come on even if it’s raining, so get to know your system’s quirks.

While little maintenance is required beyond this, the best way to be sure that your rain freeze sensor prevents your system from operating is to simply TURN OFF your sprinkler system for the winter season.
