Nichelle Nichols
Actress, Singer, and Voice artist

The beloved Nichelle Nichols, who has played Nyota Uhura in the Star Trek television and motion pictures, was born on December 28, 1932 in Woodland Hills, Calif.

Following her groundbreaking role in the TV series Nichols teamed up with NASA to recruit diverse astronauts into the progam, including women and ethnic minorities.

December 6, 1979: Star Trek: The Motion Picture released in theaters

December 14, 1984: David Lynch’s Dune, an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s popular novel of the same name, released in theaters

December 20, 1978: Philip Kaufman’s remake of the classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers released in theaters
December 23, 1954: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, an adaptation of Jules Verne’s 1870 novel, is released in theaters – the first science fiction film to be shot in CinemaScope
December 28, 1922: Comic book writer, editor and publisher Stan Lee is born
December 28, 1932: Nichelle Nichols - beloved for playing Lieutenant (later, Commander) Uhura in the original Star Trek series - is born
December 29, 1966:  “Shore Leave,” airs on Star Trek - one of two original series episodes written by Theodore Sturgeon

The nonprofit Museum of Science Fiction will be the world’s first comprehensive science fiction museum, covering the history of the genre across the arts and providing a narrative on its relationship to the real world. The Museum will show how science fiction continually inspires individuals, influences cultures, and impacts societies. Also serving as an educational catalyst to expand interest in the science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) areas, the Museum uses tools such as mobile applications and wifi-enabled display objects to engage and entertain.
