From the Chair

A few days before Georgia Tech hosted its December commencement ceremonies, the City of Atlanta hosted another celebrated cultural spectacle: the Miss Universe Competition

Not to be outdone, Georgia Tech put forward its own Miss Universe candidates -- female students and faculty who are exploring - and redefining -- the universe as we know it. Included in this group were three outstanding AE students - Sara Miller, Dawn Andrews, and Saumya Sharma.

But that's only the beginning. That list could have included Naia Butler-Craig - recipient of the 2020 Modern Technology Award. Or Paola Zanella - winner of Georgia Tech's 2019 Three-Minute Thesis competition. Or Dr. Gokcin Cinar, a recent AE alumna and current ASDL research engineer, who co-authored "Hybrid Electric Concepts Move Toward Demonstration" in Aerospace America's December 2019 retrospective. And don't forget Dr. C.Anne Patterson, an AE alumna and pioneer in the field of telemedicine.

Anyone who has ever set foot in the AE School knows that Margaret Ojala is yet another star in the AE universe. The administrative assistant to three AE school chairs and a trusted friend to countless faculty, staff, and students, Margaret is retiring at the end of this year.

None of these women has ever entered a talent contest, per se, and I don't think they would accept crowns. But their talents are everywhere evident and their leadership, undeniable. Join me in celebrating them - and all of the women of AE - who are expanding our universe.

Happy Holidays!
