UMOR launches RD webpage and new resources, services
Refreshed for the new year, U-M Research Development's webpage promotes the new services and resources the RD team now provides to support researchers. Visit research.umich.edu/research-development to connect to internal funding opportunities, sign up for limited submissions announcements and inquire about proposal development and editing services.
Online Resources
Working with Foundation Relations, the RD team has compiled a new Proposal Library that features a variety of grant proposals donated by U-M faculty, so new proposal writers can observe the style and format of successful proposals. The library features several federal sponsors, including NSF, DoD and NOAA, and a host of foundation and private funders, such as the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. When possible, we have included reviewer comments. This is a growing resource, so please contact us if you have examples to contribute.
Other new resources include an NIH S10 Toolkit and a new List of Freelance Editors.
Facilitation Services
To catalyze and support innovative research, the RD team now offers services to help teams of researchers work together efficiently and effectively. Grant Sprints are customized sessions that guide a team of collaborators through ideation and proposal planning processes. This activity is ideal for teams of 3-6 collaborators who have a good idea of what sponsor and grant mechanism they want to pursue. In 2-3 sessions, a team will generate a rough draft of an innovative, collaborative grant proposal.
Another method, called Strategic Doing, is a facilitation service that helps diverse teams discover where they want to go and how they get there. The process teaches participants how to form collaborations quickly, move toward measurable outcomes and make adjustments along the way. Use this service for long-te rm or complex planning, such as for developing strategic research plans, planning a center proposal, or mobilizing for an urgent response.

New fellowship program to support faculty public engagement
The Center for Academic Innovation is offering a new Public Engagement Faculty Fellowship to support faculty who want learn more about public engagem ent or who are interested in expanding their current engagement practices. The program includes a Studio Experience comprised of workshops, consultations with experts and short engagement opportunities. Upon completion, fellows can apply for up to $10,000 in funding and in-kind support for a proposed project. Applications for the inaugural cohort are due February 3; learn more here.

W.T. Grant Foundation to visit campus
Kimberly DuMont, Senior Program Officer from the William T. Grant Fou ndation, will be on campus January 22, 2020, to speak about the foundation and its funding for research on youth ages 5-25. She will focus on key program areas, Reducing Inequality and Improving the Use of Research Evidence, as well as the foundation's Scholars Program and Institutional Challenge Grant.

MICHR offers Responsible Conduct of Research seminars for K awardees
In Spring 2020, MICHR will offer the popular Responsible Conduct of Research for K Awardees (RCR4K) Seminar Series, which is designed to meet the requirements of the NIH K-23, or any federal or non-federal career development grant. The 5-session (10-hour commitment) seminar is mostly interactive, practice-based, and focused on addressing RCR issues (ethics, integrity, and regulatory matters) that have arisen in the course of your own funded research. It's relevant, hands-on, and includes mentoring from experienced faculty.
The five-part series begins March 5. Participants should register only for the sessions they wish to attend. Open to U-M faculty and staff. Current K scholars and K applicants will be given registration priority. Register here for this event.

Updated NIH policy statement emphasizes "Other Support" reporting
All faculty who serve as the Principal Investigator or one of the key personnel on an NIH award or pending proposal are required to review guidance and address the information below, as appropriate, by January 20:
- Part 1: Amend, as necessary, their "Other Support" documents for submission to the National Institutes of Health, and
- Part 2: Update, as necessary, their outside interests through the University of Michigan's Conflict of Interest disclosure system, M-Inform.

Medical Schools seeks nominations for associate deans for research
The U-M Medical School Office of Research announced the search to fill two associate dean for research positions. Both of these positions will report to Chief Scientific Officer Steven Kunkel, PhD, and will participate in shaping the vision for the
M edical School research mission, as well as advising on enterprise-wide policies, procedures, and operations. Each appointment is up to 50% effort.

U-M Foundation Relations
The Foundation Relations team includes fundraisers from across U-M schools, units and campuses. These enthusiastic professionals are available to assist faculty, staff and leadership in pursuing private grant funding to support research, scholarship and public engagement. We work with UMOR, ORSP, the Library and Research Development colleagues to support the efforts of faculty and staff by learning about their work, their vision for its ou tcomes, and their immediate and long-term goals; helping identify potential funders in the private sector; and designing and implementing strategies for securing grants to help fund mission-critical medical research, make cutting-edge discoveries, and execute high-impact community-based projects. As a broad-based and collaborative team, we leverage our collective expertise about each foundation or association so we can provide faculty with the best information.
Our services include helping faculty:
- frame and edit proposal submissions,
- make connections to program officers,
- identify funders whose interests align with their work, and
- learn more about select competitions via information sessions.
We connect faculty to funding opportunities via e-mail, as well as our foundations.umich.edu website, which has a comprehensive list of more than 100 open grant opportunities at any time. Our Michigan Medicine team also maintains a database of funding opportunities in medical and life sciences.

Accentuate the positive
A recent article in The British Medical Journal iterates long-known truths about gender disparities in research—women faculty are underrepresented in academic medical and life science fields, earn lower salaries, receive fewer grants and get fewer citations than their male colleagues. But the authors describe how the language researchers use in their papers may exacerbate those gender disparities.
The team analyzed the titles and abstracts of more than six million life science articles (published 2002-2017). The findings: male-led scientific teams were up to 21% more likely than women-led teams to use positive adjectives to frame their outcomes—words like “novel,” “innovative,” “remarkable” or “unprecedented.”
Using compelling language and “selling” the research matters. As the authors explain in a December opinion piece in The New York Times, scientists use titles and abstracts to decide what they will read. Papers compete for readers. Confident words like “robust,” “unique” and “promising” catch readers’ attention and ultimately lead to more citations.
Similarly, the researchers describe an analysis of 7,000 grant proposals to the Gates Foundation. Even in blinded reviews, women received significantly lower scores than their male counterparts, and the authors of that study point to communication style (“broad” v. “narrow” words) as a key driver of the gender score gap.
