In to the Next Decade

The future of food and farming has arrived. We are at a critical point in time: needing to produce more food than ever, while our current food systems are having severe impacts on land, water and biodiversity. Looking to the next decade we are equipped with knowledge and tools that can revolutionize our food systems to ensure they are safe, sustainable and trusted by all. Now its a matter of working together to turn our know-how into action.

In this letter we highlight what researchers at the University of Guelph are working on to prepare us for the next decade of food and farming.

We start by sharing a glimpse of the diverse work happening to keep our soils healthy, then we showcase the novel work done by researchers to give coffee waste a new life in the automative industry, and lastly we spotlight what we are reading, who we are following, and one of our outstanding scholars.

Soils for Today and Tomorrow
Recapping World Soil Day on December 5th

This past week the University of Guelph was the place to be to talk soils! In celebrating World Soil Day researchers at the University of Guelph shared their work on the importance of soil health in improving yields, sequestering carbon, and enhancing water and nutrient management.

"The Talk Dirt To Me" podcast featured Dr. Bill Deen and Nicola Linton who discussed what crop rotations can do for soil health, crop production, and biodiversity. This research is based on a 40-year experiment at University of Guelph's Elora research station!

 Giving Waste a New Life
Coffee Beans to Cars

Profs. Manjusri Misra and Amar Mohanty are giving coffee bean waste a new lease on life. Through a collaboration with McDonalds Corps. and Ford these researchers have developed bio-based alternatives to petro-based plastics that are primarily used for car manufacturing.

This innovation is addressing both the plastic pollution problem and climate change by minimizing the persistence of plastics in natural environments after use and reducing our reliance on petro-based products.

Arrell Scholar Spotlight
Victoria Lesy, Master Student

Victoria (first left) and her team from the 2018/2019 Innovation and Entrepreneur Cohort conducted a farmer-led research project with the Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario to produce case studies on how Ontario farmers are adapting to a changing climate.

What We're Reading
Canada's Food Price Report
10th Edition, 2020

"In 2020, the elephant in the room is climate change and its impact on our food systems. More specifically, Canadian food systems will be affected by changing weather patterns including droughts and forest fires, heavy precipitation, reduced freshwater access and rising sea levels."
Who We Are Following
Philip Loring, Arrell Chair in Food Policy and Society

Philip is the director of the recently released documentary,
'
Wetland / Wasteland', exploring the challenges and conflicts surrounding
agricultural water management in the Canadian Prairies.
Stay tuned for the upcoming application deadlines on the Arrell Global Food Innovation Award.
