Happy New Year, Pickleballers!

Our hope is that each one of you had a wonderful Christmas and that you are ready to play lots of pickleball in the New Year.  Our weekly schedule will stay the same as it was last month, for the time being. Some of our new sessions have been under-utilized but with January comes New Year’s Resolutions, so we can expect more pickleballers to join us.

On Saturday, December 21st, we had a really nice time socializing in the chapel over coffee and brownies with ice cream. Special thanks to Brenda and Mario for preparing such a tasty treat along with the coffee. The South Delta Baptist Church Pickleball Committee would also like to thank all of you for your kind words and generosity expressed towards the committee at the gathering. Our hope in 2020 is that SDBC Pickleball will continue to be a friendly and inviting environment for new players joining the sport and for those moving to different sessions, as their skills improve.

December Charity Donation
Thank you to all the pickleballers that donated food to our annual Pickleball Christmas Food Drive in support of Delta Assist, in order to help those less fortunate in our community. In addition, all money collected during the Food Drive was converted to $1,000 of Save-On gift cards (in $25 increments) and donated to Delta Assist to help out families and seniors with more specific nutritional needs over the holidays.

Weekly Pickleball Schedule
Thank you to those coming to the first session for not to entering the gym before 4:20PM as Southpointe may have use of the gym for extra curricular sports. For all other sessions, please continue to sign in no more that 30 minutes before your session and then wait in the church foyer until 5 minutes before your session time.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us or check out our website for further information.
Thank you, and enjoy your pickleball and the fellowship!

Lost and Found

Lost Paddle

Below is a picture of a paddle that was lent out by Doug Wilkins sometime in the last month or so. If you happen to have it, you can return it to one of our hosts or email Dave to arrange pickup.

If you find you forgot something in the gym after a pickleball session, we will leave items in the lost and found box in the coat rack area of the church located outside of the washrooms.

Eye Safety

Recently, we were reminded of how easy it is to get injured playing pickleball. One of our players was involved in a freak accident that appeared innocent-looking but ended up being quite serious, resulting in a trip to emergency. Eye protection is something to consider. Pickleball Levels Self-assessment

A number of players are finding the USAPBA self-assessment too cumbersome to use. You may find this assessment easier to use. Give it a try.

General Rules of Play at SDBC

  • Please sign in for your session but do not arrive to sign in more than 30 minutes before the session you wish to play in begins. Also, please do not sign up for others who are not there with you when you arrive.
  • In consideration of others playing at the current session, please do not enter the gym any earlier than 5 minutes prior to the start of your session. Please remain outside or in the church foyer.
  • Only attend a maximum of one playing session per day (exception: Skills Session)
  • Remember to pay the $2 per player fee at the beginning of your session.
  • Wear gym shoes to prevent injury from slipping.
  • Bring your own water bottle.
  • Please refrain from coaching fellow players unless they have asked for coaching.
  • When there are 4 or more players waiting, all games end when one of the teams reaches 9 points. No 2 point difference.
  • After your game, place your paddle in the rack oriented for winner or non-winner. The next four players to go out will be according to the same orientation of the closest paddle to the beginning of the rack. Alternate between winners and non-winners for next court availability.
  • At the end of the final session of the day, please help clean up and put away all the equipment and chairs. The gym must be vacated within 10 minutes of the end of the session, in order for the church to be secured.
  • Level of Play: Play at the session that is appropriate for your skill level. If you need any assistance determining your skill level, please ask one of the hosts.
  • Rating Descriptors: Skill level ratings can be broken down into a range between 1.0-5.0. An advanced player is highly skilled and has mastered third shots, dinks, and lobs, and understands body and court position. Find your rating here.
