December 19, 2019                                                                       Nr. of recipients: 3301

Dear subscriber,

We bring you the latest news from the community, along with a look back at the conferences we organised in the past year. 2019 was a big year for our partnership - not only did we hold our 10th anniversary and biggest to date conference, but we also elected a new steering committee and executive committee to lead ESP into the new decade.

The ESP community has been extremely active throughout the year, and we would like to thank all the working groups, national networks, regional chapters and members for their activities and continuous input to the conference sessions, ESP website and to this newsletter. If you'd like to look back on the different activities and developments in the ESP network this year, check out all our previous newsletters here.

We are looking forward to the upcoming regional meetings planned for 2020 and 2021 - read below for a list of the conferences that are already in preparation. We hope to see many of you there!

Thank you for following the ESP Update. We wish you a peaceful holiday season and a wonderful New Year!

Looking back at the ESP 2019 conferences

2nd ESP Africa Conference 2019

The second ESP conference for the region of Africa took place 17-20 June 2019 in Kpalime, Togo. Following that, a meeting of the Africa regional chapter including new and interested members took place during the ESP10 conference in October, initiating a number of ideas for network activities and events for ESP RC Africa.

10th ESP World Conference 2020

The 10th ESP World Conference took place between 21-25 October in Hannover, Germany and welcomed more than 750 participants from over 65 countries, thus becoming the biggest ESP conference yet, with the widest international outreach.

The conference set a great example as the majority of keynote speakers and session hosts were female, child daycare was available, all the food was organic, local, and vegetarian and the participants collected over 1200 euro in donations to a carbon offset project – Moor Futures. Also, it hosted the first full ESP Business Day that was well attended by the business community.

News from our Working Groups

SWG 6 – ES in Business

The SWG6 ES in Business organised the ESP10 business day in Hannover. Many business and representatives attended the ESP day and showed that quite a few collaborations between the science and business world already exist. More ideas to bridge the gap between science and research and opportunities for the group were provided. Especially within the financial sector there seems to be a keen interest in incorporating ecosystem services within assessments. A report of the business day can be found here

As a result of the business day the Dutch government has provided ESP with some seed money to strengthen science-business collaboration in The Netherlands. Currently we’re making an inventory of the main opportunities for collaborations on a national level and we hope to expand this to a European level too. If you would like to join the SWG 6 and/or have any ideas or case studies you would like to share, please contact martine.vanweelden@fsd.nl

TWG 11 – Global ES Flows

During ESP10 in the session of TWG11 we invited to participate in a short survey on the current state-of-the-art and future perspectives regarding interregional flows of ecosystem services. Have a look at this overview of the output.

Vacancy for a lead team member: TWG 11 “Global ES Flows” aims at elaborating methods how to complement regional assessments of ecosystem services with a global assessment of ecosystem flows to and from a specific region. Over the past years, the TWG has organized multiple conference sessions, published three common papers based on a series of workshops, and has organized one special issue of Ecosystem Services. Currently, we have a vacancy for an additional lead team member. Do you have experience with global-scale flows of ecosystem services and would you like to contribute to organizing TWG activities such as workshops, conference sessions, and papers? Express your interest through an email to Thomas.Koellner@uni-bayreuth.de. Given the composition of the lead team, we especially encourage interest from outside Europe.

Your help is needed:

Questionnaire assessing the ecosystem service potential of mangrove ecosystems in Kenya

Your answers will feed into an exciting case study that analyses the linkages between management activities and the potential for mangrove ecosystem service provision in Gazi Bay, Kenya, and offers suggestions on how to integrate the findings into the planning of mangrove management projects in the region.

Access the ecosystem service assessment questionnaire here.
