  WVU IS SELECTED FOR
2020 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT CLASSIFICATION

(Stanford, CA & Providence, R.I.) - The Carnegie Foundation has announced that West Virginia University is one of the 119 U.S. colleges and universities to receive the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, an elective designation that indicates institutional commitment to community engagement.

This important classification is awarded following a process of self-study by each institution, which is then assessed by a national review committee led by the Swearer Center for Public Engagement at Brown University, the administrative and research home for the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification.

“These newly-classified and re-classified institutions are doing exceptional work to forward their public purpose in and through community engagement that enriches teaching and research while also benefiting the broader community,” noted Mathew Johnson, executive director of the Swearer Center.

“As we strive to meet the growing needs of a new generation of students, it is important that we also acknowledge and support the evolving needs of our communities and state,” Wood-Turner said. “The mutually beneficial relationships that we establish through community engaged scholarship advance student learning, community development and increase our influence on positive change for our future.”

The Carnegie Community Engagement Classification has been the leading framework for institutional assessment and recognition of community engagement in U.S. higher education for the past 14 years with multiple classification cycles in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2015 and 2020.

“We also note that many more institutions who are not receiving classification today are doing similar important work and we celebrate them as well,” Johnson added. “It is clear that many campuses are facing difficult times and finding it challenging to maintain and advance their community engagement in the current climate. It is our hope that by celebrating these classified campuses others might come to see community engagement as part of the strategy to address the current set of challenges in higher education.”

Let the Countdown to the Get Moving
Day of Play Begin!

With the collaboration of current and former WVU football players, volunteers, parents and Get Moving administrators, the Day of Play will be hosting the 7th annual Day of Play, only a month away!

On March 14th, children - ages four to twelve - and their families gather for the free event at the WVU Players Facility for registration where they will receive a free t-shirt and take-home bag. The fun happens in the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility.

Dr. Elizabeth Oppe started this organization, in 2014, as the statistics of childhood obesity in West Virginia worsened.

These football players and volunteers gather to inspire healthy lifestyle choices amongst children in the Mountain State, all while having fun and sharing laughs!

On the Day of Play, children participate in ten, practice drill stations. WVU football players and group leaders are located at each station to interact with each age group while teaching the children the correct and safe way to play with others.

Since its creation in 2014, Get Moving has had around 1000 children participate in the event, to date. As many as 220 children participated in the 2019 Day of Play.

Furthermore, the athletes have visited children at the WVU Medicine Pediatric Unit the evening before the Day of Play.

Volunteers and sponsors are needed for the event on March 14. Sponsors can contact Dr. Elizabeth Oppe by email elizabeth.oppe@getmovingwv.org. WVU Volunteers can sign-up on iServe for community service hours.

Voting is often described as a civic duty that all Americans should participate in.  However, among WVU’s college students, voting rates fall behind the American average and even the average of other colleges. In 2016, 56.0% of Americans voted, compared to 51.0% of college students, and 43.7% of WVU students (National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement, Census Bureau). Encourage your students to be involved in this initiative.

Volunteers are needed to help run voter registration tables. Sign-up here!
