Call for Proposals for 2020-21 ISCE Scholars Program
ISCE is accepting applications for its 2020-21 Scholars Program. This signature program provides faculty support for developing grant proposals in the social sciences, broadly defined, and consistent with ISCE’s four thematic areas and the University’s Transdisciplinary Communities. Proposed projects are expected to address critical individual and social concerns impacting the lives of people and places locally, nationally, or across the globe.The Scholars Program supports faculty to undertake work in a new or existing area, with the expectation that proposals developed through the program lead to external funding. Requests for Drug Screening & Residential Treatment Proposals Announced
The Virginia Higher Education Opioid Consortium (VHEOC) is a collaboration of five Virginia public universities working together to support local efforts to prevent and treat opioid and other substance use disorders with cutting edge academic resources. Their mission is to assist Community Services Boards to address the opioid crisis. Click on the flier to learn more about VHEOC. Two new calls for proposals are now open:.

Call for Participants: Building Legal Literacies for Text Data Mining
Interested in gaining skills to navigate law, policy, ethics and risk related to digital humanities text and data mining? Apply to attend Building Legal Literacies in Text Data Mining (LLTDM), a funded opportunity to explore these timely issues. Building LLTDM will be held June 23-26, 2020 on the UC Berkeley Campus in CA and will support 32 participants. Click here for details and how to apply.

Research to Reduce Youth Inequality
The William T. Grant Foundation is inviting applications for its Research Grants on Reducing Inequality program, which supports high-quality field-initiated studies from a range of disciplines and methodologies that are relevant to policies and practices that affect the lives of young people in the U.S. Grants of up to $600,000 over a period of up to three years will be awarded. Diversity in Innovation QuickFire Challenge
Johnson & Johnson invites applications for the Diversity in Innovation QuickFire Challenge which will award grants of up to $250,000  to multicultural innovators with the best idea, technology, or solution aimed at improving human healthcare. Awardees will also be given access to the global JLABS network and mentorship from experts at the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies. Click here for details.

Call for Research on Access to Mental Health Care for Children
The Klingenstein Third Generation Foundation is soliciting proposals for investigator-initiated projects that demonstrate the benefits of new health care delivery methods or prevention approaches for mental healthcare for children. Proposals must address the training of non-mental healthcare providers, such as primary care providers or lay therapists, as well as how the project will improve access to care for children. Two grants of up to $50,000 per year for up to two years will be awarded. Click here for details.

Opportunity to Serve as Joint Chair in Contemporary Public Policy
Fulbright Canada has announced an opportunity for a Joint Chair in Contemporary Public Policy that will allow an exceptional US-based scholar to spend 4 months in Canada starting in September 2020. This award is a joint initiative between Fulbright Canada and the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation based in Montreal. The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation is interested in scholars who undertake research in the social sciences and humanities under four themes: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada and the World, and People and their Natural Environment. A $25,000 stipend, travel allowance and other benefits are offered. Click here for details.

Fall 2020 Arts and Humanities Fellowships
The Bogliasco Foundation supports the arts and humanities by providing one-month residential fellowships at its study center in Italy. Sixty fellowships are awarded to individuals doing creative or scholarly work in the following disciplines: archaeology, architecture, classics, dance, film/video, history, landscape architecture, literature, music, philosophy, theater, and visual arts. Fellowships cover room and board but do not provide for travel or a living stipend. Click here for details.

New R03 Opportunities in Alzheimer's Research
The National Institute on Aging's Small Research Grant Program for the Next Generation of Researchers in Alzheimer's Disease/Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (AD/ADRD) is designed to encourage a new generation of scientists to pursue research and academic careers in neuroscience, AD/ADRD and healthy brain aging. Apply for Tuition-Free Summer Programs
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has released information about its 2020 tuition-free summer programs, which it offers each year to provide an opportunity for educators to study a variety of humanities topics. These programs focus on specific topics, texts, and questions in the humanities and promote connections between teaching and research in the humanities. NEH offers stipends to help cover the cost of travel and living expenses for these one- to four-week programs.  Click here for details.

Overview of ISCE/CLAHS Proposal Writing Workshop Offered

Amplifying Unheard Voices - Jan 14, 2020
All are invited to attend the Amplifying Unheard Voices Symposium on Jan 14, 2020 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the Newman Library Multipurpose Room. Come listen to and honor local stories that have been missing from media and research. The NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research will hold the 20th Annual Summer Institute on Randomized Behavioral Clinical Trials on July 19-27, 2020, in Potomac, MD. Priority is given to individuals who have received their PhD, MD, or equivalent after 2013, but all researchers interested in pursuing a career in behaviorally-focused clinical research are encouraged to apply. White House Science and Technology Policy Office Wants Your Input!
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has issued a request for information on the research environment. Comments will be used to inform the work of the Joint Committee on the Research Environment (JCORE), a committee of the National Science and Technology Council. The request asks for information on actions that Federal agencies can take, working in partnership with private industry, academic institutions, and non-profit/philanthropic organizations, to maximize the quality and effectiveness of the American research environment across JCORE's four main areas. Helping coastal communities face the challenges posed by flooding and sea level rise
Assistant Professor Anamaria Bukvic of the College of Natural Resources and Environment is using a fellowship from the National Center for Atmospheric Research to look into the issue of population mobility in the face of coastal vulnerability. Read more...
