Meet Sophia
Sophia likes the quiet space at Community Health Partners' (CHP's) adult education classroom. She also likes the freedom to make her own study schedule AND the encouragement and the kindness of Sheila Joronen. Sheila is the teacher at CHP. Sophia’s favorite subject has always been English, particularly reading and creative writing.
Sophia has been preparing for the HiSET at CHP. HiSET is an acronym that stands for High School Equivalency Test. It's a series of five tests, which, if passed, earns the student a High School Equivalency Diploma. Sophia passed the HiSET on December 10th. Nice work Sophia!
Besides Sheila, Sophia’s other biggest cheerleader is her mom. Mom made sure she always got to CHP for her study sessions, even when roads were bad or when life got busy. Thanks Mom.
Passing the HiSET is just the beginning for Sophia. She plans on working close to home over the next few months while she explores options for college in the fall of 2020. She is unsure at this point what she’d like to major in, but she does know that she likes to travel. Although she’s looking at colleges close by, she’s hoping to find a program to do a semester abroad, to expand her horizons. A trip to NYC and anywhere tropical are high on her list.
Sophia's advice... ‘not to slack, to just get it done, otherwise you’ll just be stressed, so better to just do it now.’
Upcoming HiSET Dates
CHP offers the HiSET once a month. You must register online with ETS at https://hiset.ets.org/. ETS will charge you $10.75 per test. That's $53.75 for all 5 tests. CHP will charge you $5 per test or a maximum of $15.
