Help Needed During the Holidays
|
|
Abernethy Elementary is an extremely caring school, and we know that the health and happiness of each child here contributes to the health and happiness of the entire community. We have several families that are needing support this year for the extended break and holidays and would like to open it up to the community to help provide this support. Contributions that would be helpful are in the form of: gift cards Fred Meyer or Target or warm winter clothing. If you are interested in assisting with winter clothing items, please contact Jenny Morgan for more information about this. All contributions can be brought to Jenny in room 5A or put in her box in the office. If you are a family in need of assistance this year, please call Jenny Morgan at 503-916-6190.
Thank you for your care and concern for our school community.

2019-2020 Abernethy PTA Mini Grant
|
|
The results are finally in!!!! The Mini-Grant Committee received some absolutely stellar ideas this year and are really excited and proud to be able to fund the following proposals:
*New Gaga Ball and Tetherball equipment for the playground (if you don’t know what Gaga is, check it out – it is a super fun game!)
*Several Speakers to present to the entire Abernethy community (more on this later)
|
|
|
*Racial Equity Training for one of our amazing teachers
*Trailblazer Tickets for Blazer Dance chaperones
*Transportation for the 3rd Grade team to attend the Teacher’s College Summer Writing Institute in New York City
*New Chrome Books
*New Books for the 1st Grade Team to support conversations they are having in class about race and racism
No field trip to the moon this year, but I suppose there is always next year!!!
On behalf of the Mini-Grant committee, I would like to thank all of the parents, school staff, and community members who submitted their ideas. It is very clear that this is a community that cares a lot about our school and our kiddos. Keep those ideas coming. Also, a major thank you to the PTA executive committee for providing the funding for our Mini-Grant recipients and for all of your support with this process.
Sincerely,
Mark Lawson (Zev – 4th Grade; Ori – 1st Grade)

A note from our fantastic Kitchen Crew:
We are often asked for our Dragon Dressing recipe - a recipe created by our team and in use for over 10 years now and is definitely a student favorite. In fact, "Dragon Sauce" was created in the Abernethy Kitchen by Chef Nicole. It was recently featured on the PPS Nutrition Services page!
The original recipe for home use is below:
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup white vinegar or rice wine vinegar
1 clove garlic, minced
1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon ginger powder or freshly minced ginger
4 Tablespoons brown sugar
1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
salt and pepper to taste

Scholastic Book Fair was a Success
|
|
Thank you for shopping at the Scholastic Book Fair!
We have many people to thank for this hugely successful event.
Thank you so much to our community for supporting the Abernethy Library by shopping at our Scholastic Book Fair. We had our best year ever, raising thousands of dollars for Ms. Quinn to buy books for the school library. This money represents about 75% of her annual budget. Our library could not offer nearly as many exciting new books without this fundraiser.
Thank you to all students and parents who ROUNDED UP for the James John Elementary School Library. Thanks to your generosity we were able to donate almost 30 brand new books to the James John Library where they will be used by hundreds of students at the North Portland school.
|
|
|
Your ROUNDING UP donations enabled us to purchase all these books for the library at James John Elementary School in North Portland!
|
|
Thank you to all the volunteers that helped us set up and run the book fair this year! Your time and assistance are invaluable.
Thank you to the families that purchased books from the teachers' wish list book bins, and thank you to Dr. Peterson for allocating school dollars to buy more books for every single classroom at Abenethy! This gives our students more opportunities for reading curated book collections, right within their own classrooms.
And finally a HUGE thank you to Ms. Quinn for her tireless dedication in teaching our students so many skills they will use for years to come -- like Internet safety, typing, being savvy consumers, and digital creativity -- not to mention helping them discover and nurture a love of literature. I think I speak for our community when I say we are more than happy for the opportunity to support Ms. Quinn and the library.
Until next year.. happy reading!
