Note from Dr. Cannon

December 16, 2019

As we head into our two week Holiday Break, I want to take this opportunity to thank our students, parents, and staff for their continued support of East Grand Rapids Public Schools and Breton Downs Elementary.  As always I feel so fortunate to work in a public school system that embraces the whole child and has dedicated students, involved parents, caring staff, and outstanding community members. Have a wonderful holiday with family and friends!  We will see you on Monday, January 6, 2020!

No school- Friday, December 20

Just a friendly reminder that there is no school for students on Friday, December 20.

Community Kindness Day and Winter Showcase

Last week we had two new special events: Community Kindness Day and Winter Showcase.  On Community Kindness Day, our students spread kindness in our community and contributed to specific, local organizations by forgoing the traditional, classroom holiday party.  A big thank you to our 5th grade teachers, Mrs. Rieth, Mrs. Gast, and Ms. Chen and 5th grade students for organizing and presenting on the local organizations. And thank you to our students and families for donating to Toys for Tots, the Humane Society, Kids Food Basket, Family Promise, Veterans Home, and the Tree Top Organization.

In the afternoon of December 10, we had our first Winter Showcase to highlight our students’ learning in their art, music, and physical education classes.  Performing for a standing room only crowd, our students sang songs around the theme of winter. There were also videos highlighting our students in action and wintry artwork displayed in our hallways.  Thank you to our Specials teachers, Mrs. Mills, Mrs. Klopcic, and Mrs. Wagenmaker, for putting together a wonderful performance!

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at ccannon@egrps.org.  I can also be found on Twitter: @PrincipalCannon.

Warmest regards,

Report Cards

Over the course of the past two years, a committee consisting of teachers, building principals, and district administrators worked collaboratively to revise the district’s elementary report card. These updates were made to align with the common core standards and to examine how we communicate a student’s progress to parents. Knowing the purpose of report cards is to convey information from the school to parents about a student’s educational progress, revisions were made to the grading system to provide parents with more explicit and meaningful feedback regarding student progress throughout the school year.  With this change, fourth grade students will no longer receive letter grades and students in kindergarten through grade 4 will use the following academic scale:

Kindergarten through Grade 4 Academic Scale

1 Meeting or exceeding grade level expectations for this point in time

2 Approaching grade level expectations for this point in time

3 Does not meet grade level expectations for this point in time

This grading system will also be implemented with our 5th grade report cards during the 2020-2021 school year. It is our goal to have a consistent academic scale that best communicates the progress of our elementary students.  If you have any questions regarding the new academic scale for our 4th grade students, please let me know. First semester report cards will be available on Friday, January 10, 2020
