Highlights of Presbytery meeting 13th November 2019

The Presbytery has had its fourth and final meeting of 2019.  Here is a snapshot of some of the items discussed.

Worship was led by the five current Candidates of SCCP: Natasha He, Duncan McDiarmid , Myeongcheol John Oh, Kepueli Vaka, and Liam Miller.

Andy Corkill from Lindfield Uniting Church was accepted as a Candidate for Ministry of the Word in August 2019.  Here he is updating Presbytery on his journey
.

Presbytery Strategic Plan: Catalysing growth
Members participated in an exercise based on the concept of change (The Changing Game).  Two people were active participants in each group.  One had to look away and the other had to change 5 things about their appearance.  The first person then had to spot the differences.  The second round was harder, where the same person then had to change a further 5 things.  Others in the group were helpful in making suggestions or providing items.  All in all it was a fun activity, bringing home the fact that change can be hard!  And scary!  It can be made easier when it is a group effort and some small changes can make a big difference.  Leadership and enthusiasm of those driving the change have a huge impact on the outcome as well as how many are willing to participate.

Between now and March 2020, congregations are being asked what they might identify as an intentional new growth project / initiative and what support, resources they have to allocate to their “new thing”, as well as what support / resources they are seeking.  Compiling this information will guide the work of the Life and Witness Committee and the Presbytery Strategy Team in 2020.
The Presbytery office will send out forms to congregations to fill in, to help resource individual ideas.  Keep in mind though, that the presbytery leaders can help resource, but congregations/zones need to drive the ideas and share connections.  Congregations are encouraged to keep adding new ideas for consideration and discussion to their Council meetings, or even have a standing item on the Agenda.

The next Presbytery meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 19th February, 2020  7pm at Eastwood UC.

We have been celebrating the start of new Placements in our Presbytery, the final induction for the year as follows:

KNOW THE SIGNS OF EMOTIONAL DISTRESS
As we approach the holiday period, staff at Lifeline prepare for the influx of calls expected to be received to our 13 11 14 crisis line and 0477 13 11 14 text service over the festive season, when budgets, patience and tension can be further stretched/ raised to breaking point and feelings of loneliness and disconnection are exacerbated. So Christmas can be a challenging time.

If you or someone you know would benefit from gaining skills in supporting family, friends, neighbours or colleagues who may need extra support, then please share the following upcoming training workshop opportunities with them. Please share widely with your family, friends and wider network to promote these opportunities. All funds raised from training support our 13 11 14 telephone crisis support line (every call costs $27.96).

Each year 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness. Many people are not knowledgeable or confident to offer assistance. Physical first aid is accepted and widespread in our community, however most do not cover mental health problems.
