We cover a lot of news and announcements about digital health technologies to provide context for you. Even within The Medical Futurist team, there are favorite technologies and trends. And we thought it would be time to share the technologies we’re excited about! With advancements in exoskeleton technology, A.I.’s ever-increasing importance in healthcare and technologies like 5G and quantum computing soon going mainstream, there’s much to be excited about. Without further ado, let’s jump in!

CHINA'S CRISPR BABIES

Earlier this year a source sent us a copy of an unpublished manuscript describing the creation of the first gene-edited babies, born last year in China. Today, we are making excerpts of that manuscript public for the first time.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT?

The results of this Chinese CRISPR debate will determine the upcoming decade of biothical policies.

Can we stay human in the age of A.I.? To go even further, can we grow in humanity, can we shape a more humane, more equitable and sustainable healthcare? This e-book aims to prepare healthcare and medical professionals for the era of human-machine collaboration. Read our guide to understanding, anticipating and controlling artificial intelligence.

The genome editing method called CRISPR-Cas9 is an experiment that can fundamentally change not just our health, but human evolution itself. It has both wonderful potentials and frightening possibilities - just like the discovery of nuclear fission, which created both nuclear power and atomic bombs.

That’s why CRISPR is the nuclear fission of biology.

Two Senate Democrats are challenging Medicare’s top official to investigate how health care tools based on artificial intelligence may reflect the flaws and biases of the people who develop them — and perpetuate racial biases.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT?

It's a great progress to see biased A.I. being targeted by high level policy makers.

It was on November 21st that I was last in Copenhagen, not to have some of that famous Æbleflæsk but to moderate an OECD event. It was encouraging to see country leaders take a positive stance towards digital health and to hear about concrete examples as to how they are implementing technology to modify their local healthcare landscape. This experience served as an inspiration to write this article.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT?

By highlighting the most notable initiatives pertaining to digital health around the world by country, we aim at inspiring others to do the same.

Amazon’s next big step in health care is with voice transcription technology that’s designed to allow doctors to spend more time with patients and less time at the computer. At Amazon Web Services’ re:Invent conference on Tuesday, the company is launching a service called Amazon Transcribe Medical, which transcribes doctor-patient interactions and plugs the text straight into the medical record.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT?

Voice-to-text solutions are crucial in impoving how physicians spend their time with their electronic medical record systems.
