MsWas's Message Corner

Greetings Cannonballers,

It's the most wonderful time of the year
With the best/worst lists going
And everyone telling you read this book here
It's the most wonderful time of the year

It's the hap-happiest season of all
With those pages a-flipping and everyone shipping
All over the world
It's the hap-happiest season of all

There'll be books we are reading
Reviews we are posting
And registration for next year
There'll be scary ghost stories
And tales of the glories of
Book Clubs held long, long ago

It's the most wonderful time of the year
We’re planning for next year
What faves will be published
What books we’ll revere
It's the most wonderful time
Of the year!

Have a wonderful holiday season, filled with books!

--MsWas

Q&A with a Cannonballer: Caesar's Wife

Your bio says you joined Cannonball to “once again” prioritize reading in your life. Has it worked?

You betcha! Based on data alone: last year I only managed to read one book, this year I’m up to 25! I thrive on goals and deadlines, so participating in Cannonball Read has really motivated me to return to the written word. I sometimes feel quite overwhelmed with entertainment options – there are so many great TV shows and games at my fingertips. Committing to a Half Cannonball has meant that, when given the choice, I now pick up a book instead of the remote (usually!).

#GivingTuesday

We appreciate all of you who read, review, comment, click, shop the Buy Hole, and especially donate! During this year's 33 Days of Giving fundraiser, we raised $1,750. Everybody who donated during that month-ish was entered into a drawing for a book- and fun-filled prize pack, and lucky elemenopee was the winner! Thank you all for your continued support.

Holiday Book Exchange

We have 38 Cannonballers signed up to send books to each other this year. If you're participating, please remember to mail your books by Wednesday, December 11. If you're curious to know what kind of goodies others are getting, check out the Book Exchange tag, and don't forget to publish your own post to let your gifter know you love your gift. Questions? Best & Worst

It's the most list-making time of the year! Hopefully you read a lot more five-star books than one-star books, but we want to hear about both. Send MsWas your three best and one worst book of the year by Monday, December 23, then watch for the yearly wrap-up post on Pajiba.

3 Star Thrillers: badkittyuno's review of An Unwanted Guest, Lock Every Door, The Turn of the Key

Dec 10, 2019 05:36 pm
(3 stars) An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena This was probably two and a half stars, but I’m rounding up. The story was decent but pretty predictable. An Unwanted Guest takes place in a small family-run inn on a night when the weather is so bad that all the guests are trapped inside. They lose power and the roads are unpassable. Unfortunately, that’s right around when people start dying. First, the beautiful engaged woman falls down the stairs. Everyone suspects her fiance until an author working on her latest book is found dead as well. From there, no one can […]

….And then everyone clapped: octothorp's review of Good Luck With That

Dec 10, 2019 05:10 pm
My dad once told me of a movie he started watching about a WWII veteran presumed dead coming back into town to find his wife about to marry another man; the wife was beside herself and bemoaned her situation to her best friend “I know you always had a crush on (dead soldier), but surely you understand my impossible position,” whereupon my father turned off the TV as that one sentence rendered the rest of the movie irrelevant. I picked up this book, about two friends who met at a weight loss camp mourning the loss of a third to […]

Definitely watching out for more Lisa Jewell titles: octothorp's review of Watching You

Dec 10, 2019 04:48 pm
I misplaced this book halfway through reading it and I was SOOOO upset, because this was a page turner. Nothing is gonna be the Dublin Murder Squad books, but until Tana French starts writing as fast as I read, I’ve been desperate for something to scratch the mystery itch. Same with Liane Moriarty and her middle class Australian intrigue; I’ve been wanting something well written but still brisk and fun. This is kind of the perfect intersection of the two. So huzzah that this turned up and I got to find out whodunnit. The mystery revolves around a murder in […]

Volume 27 of who knows how many Voumes of Stephan Pastis: BlackRaven's review of Pearls Hogs the Road: A Pearls Before Swine Treasury Volume 27

Dec 10, 2019 04:21 pm
Pearls Hogs the Road: A Pearls Before Swine Treasury is just that, a collection of the Pearls Before Swine comic strips. Stephan Pastis, however, has commentary after several of the strips. Sometimes they are comments on the strip itself and sometimes it is something completely random. Therefore, it is exactly what you would expect from a Pearls Before Swine comic strip treasury. This commentary by the author/illustrator at times can be funnier than the strips themselves (usually he comments on the strip, but he does have some randomness such as a child that was sitting in front of him on […]

This guy sees dead people: kfishgirl's review of Forgotten Bones (Dead Remaining Book 1)

Dec 10, 2019 03:51 pm
This book was a Kindle first read I believe, so I didn’t pay any money for it.  Thankfully, I liked it! The story is split into two distinct story lines for the first (approximately) half of the book.  Eventually they come together, but let’s stick to the split stories for now. There’s actually a totally different story at the very beginning.  There’s a couple driving home from a bar, and the lady gets frisky.  They end up crashing into a telephone pole, and someone finds the body of a dead child.  It’s like an episode of Law and Order though, […]
