I already wished you a happy and joyous Christmas last week. However, as the culture at large moves past the season because December 25 has passed and businesses have decided they have nothing related to Christmas left to sell you (moving their attention to selling you on participating in fancy New Years celebrations), I want to remind everyone that we are still in the Christmas season. Our Orthodox friends start counting the twelve days of Christmas on December 25 and celebrate Christmas on January 6 or 7, depending on which calendar is followed. My great grandparents immigrated to this country from Yugoslavia, and my family still celebrates Serbian Christmas on January 7 in addition to our December celebrations. Veselé božić from my Serbian family to you! More than a reminder of different traditions among Christians, I find remembering that we are still in the Christmas season helpful because it is a time of both excitement and uncertainty. When Jesus was born, people were just as unsure about what his birth meant as they were excited. The cold still of Winter is a perfect time to contemplate excitement and uncertainty for a while, to keep celebrating the full meaning of Christmas as we ponder what ourselves, our communities, and our world will become in the future. So while I also wish you all a happy ans safe new year, I hope you dwell on the excitement and uncertainty of Christmas for a little longer.
