During the Ashland Global Peace Conference State Panel on September 21, 2019, Oregon State Senator Jeff Golden and State Representative Pam Marsh shared their insight and practice of the Culture of Peace on their work in both chambers of the legislature. In the current extreme polarized political climate, it is a struggle to get the needed work done.
“Globally and nationally, we are experiencing rapid changes and live in a constant state of anxiety and insecurity about the future. In the frantic pace of the legislature trying to get things done, I must remember the moment of clarity of why I am here and not to get swept up in the frantic difficult atmosphere of winning or losing. I encourage you to have an ongoing engagement with the legislators and commit to peace and justice, overcoming the pressure of the money in politics. When people lead, the leaders will follow.”
Senator Jeff Golden
“Stay focused on the moment to moment, seek, identify and focus on the outcome of shared values, the values that guide all the work that come out of the capital. To remain focused and motivated by the work. How I see peacemaking happening in Salem is on a daily basis, putting into place the practical programs and funding to enable families to thrive.”
