Winter Fruit Tree Maintenance & Selection

A few notes about winter fruit tree maintenance and fruit tree selection:

  • While fruit trees are dormant, it's a good idea to consider pruning them to improve tree structure and encourage fruit production. Our upcoming fruit tree pruning workshop will show you the best techniques from an experienced Master Gardener and professional landscaper in the beautiful San Juan Bautista Historic State Park Orchard.
  • In addition to pruning, winter dormancy is the best time for about pest and disease management. Check out the UC Master Gardener Tip Sheet about Winter Pest Management in Backyard Deciduous Fruit Trees (PDF), including a list of detailed information for backyard gardens by tree type.
  • Considering adding bare root fruit trees to your garden? Don't be afraid to ask questions, as fruit tree selection for your particular microclimate and site is a critical key to home orchard success. Read this primer about fruit tree selection for the home orchard, including resource links for varieties with low-chill requirements (less than 300 hours below <45°F).
RESOURCES
The University of California measures chill hours for each county in the state and offers a chill hour calculator. Choose the closest weather station and a date range to determine cumulative chill hours for your area.
