The School Year in Review

The 2019-2020 school year was a massively successful time for the Canadian University Shooting Federation. We have experienced growth both in the number of affiliated clubs as well as overall membership, hosted interclub competitions and educational events, and exposed many Canadian students to how fun, and safe, the shooting sports can be.
As spring start and the winter semester draws to a close, we reflect on the accomplishments and events of the past year, and to look forward into this crazy year and what it will hold. Let's take a few minutes to look back on some of the larger events, advancements, and accomplishments for the CUSF, and what you can expect from us moving forward!

Current Outlook and Upcoming Projects
After incorporation and starting operations as a non-profit in 2018, the CUSF has worked hard to help start new student run firearms associations. We were able to start 8 in 2019-2020, bringing the national total to 17. In addition we have been expanding existing clubs based on the principles of sport, education, and leadership. With another 11 clubs in various stages of the University/College ratification process, we are excited for the possibility of new organizations for Fall of 2020!
Firearms education for students is a top priority for the CUSF. We are working to increase our online presence and develop new programs that are ready to roll out when things normalize. Some highlights from our AGM in early April:
- implementation of Field Officer Program to assist student club manpower
- Conservation Program to increase cooperation in sector
- Women's Program and Shotgun Clinic development

Post-secondary Sport Shooting
We successfully hosted the first edition of the CUSF Fall Classic, having shooters from Alberta and Ontario participate in the shotgun tournament. Ana Tsementzis came out on top winning our second Trap tournament in a row! On the rifle side, we took a step back and revamped our competition to make it as easy as possible for students to compete. However, due to the COVID situation the CUSF had to postpone our programs to the Fall.
With the time we have now we are designing a Shotgun 101 Fundamentals Clinic to roll out to students across the country in the next year, solidifying our partnership with Project Mapleseed and working on making our national shooting league better than ever!

We are very grateful for all the organizations who sponsored and partnered with us in the last year! Some notable supporters include Cabela's and R&R Rentals, for the largest and longest sponsorship respectively.
We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead, aiming to unite the industry, non profits, sport shooters, conservation orgs and hunters with post-secondary students!

Club Spotlight: University of Windsor Firearms Association

Our club has had a strong first year. The executive team has grown to 5 members and our overall membership is 80+ people, not a bad start. The club has nearly acquired all the gear needed to fill our marksman and trap/skeet needs. We have had amazing success in partnering with local groups including the Windsor Sportsman Club for all our shotgun needs. We want to give a huge shout out to all the General Gun and their staff for the amazing support they gave us this year.

We have begun to reach out for partnerships and sponsorships to improve our events and expand our abilities. The support we have received so far has been amazing and a great help. We have also begun our very first fundraising pushes this summer and we will try to have everything set up for summer Trap/Skeet when safe to do so. We have also been joined by a fellow canuck from across our stream who has been a great help in providing us with advice, support, and coaching. He has been an amazing help and we couldn’t be more grateful.
As our first year ends, all of us are looking forward to our new partnerships being built, new relations forming in the community, and to the upcoming trap and skeet season. We hope to hit the range soon once safe to do so and our fundraising events will follow. We want to thank everyone at the CUSF, UWindsor, and the Canadian firearms community for all the help we have been given in our first year!
