But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!' So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. -- Galatians 4:4-7
The holidays are often times in which we socialize with friends and family, observe long-held traditions, and settle in to what is ideally a comfortable space in our lives. Of course, human life being what it is, the "perfect" Christmas is largely an illusion. We might be mourning a loved one, getting over an illness, or having to deal with family members who are--a challenge--to deal with, especially with a bit of holiday cheer thrown in. Christmas is also often a time in which expectations are impossibly high and there is often a let down feeling following Christmas. Then, too, by now the "after Christmas" sales are in full swing and the world has moved in to New Year's Day or even Valentine's Day!
But the wonderful thing about the fact that Christmas is twelve days long is that we can settle in to celebrating the anniversary of the birth of the Christ child and not to jam everything into 24 hours. That celebration is not merely the celebration of the birth of Jesus, but the celebration of our own adoption into God's family through baptism. The wonder of Christmas is that just as God came into the world as a human child, that child's birth, life, death, and resurrection enabled us to be God's children--so familiar that we can call God, the Creator of the Universe, "Abba!" ("Daddy!"). It is that familial and familiar relationship with God that give our lives purpose and power. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and rejoice!

BFF Brief: Finishing Concrete, Elevator Going In, and MORE!
Between Christmas and New Year's Day we hope to continue to make progress on our building project. The sheetrock and plastering is essentially completed, and we hope to have the texturing and paint up soon. The concrete is in the process of being poured for the new entrance and courtyard and we will shortly regain access to our church entrance for the first time in more than a year. The elevator should be going in soon, after a few tweaks were needed in the preparation for it. We're racing the clock and still hope to at least be able to meet in our new building for our Annual Meeting on January 26.
We also continue our "Close the Gap" capital campaign. Members are invited to contribute to the Building For the Future Fund through this link so that your contribution will be counted in this tax year. We currently have about a $75,000 gap, plus $75,000 that we expect to receive in pledges over the next couple of years. If you wish to contribute by check, please do so by Sunday so we can record it before the end of the year. Some tax professionals suggest combining December and January donations at the very end of December to get above the threshoold of the standard deduction. Consult your tax professional, but your gift is welcome regardless! Contributions may be made through our online giving link and pledges may be made via email to finance@stmarks-medford.org. Thank you again for your financial and prayerful support!

NEW Book Study:
The Meaning of Mary Magdalene: Discovering the Woman at the Heart of Christianity by Cynthia Bourgeault
|
|
The book group will begin a new book on January 8: The Meaning of Mary Magdalene: Discovering the Woman at the Heart of Christianity by Episcopal priest Cynthia Bourgeault. This book is "a radical view of Mary Magdalene as Jesus’s most important disciple, the one he considered to understand his teaching best. That teaching was characterized by a non-dualistic approach to the world and by a deep understanding of the value of the feminine. Cynthia shows how an understanding of Mary Magdalene can revitalize contemporary Christianity, how Christians and others can, through her, find their way to Jesus’s original teachings and apply them to their modern lives." Books are $12 and are available at smile.amazon.com (St. Mark's gets a percentage!). Join us at 5:30 pm on Wednesday evenings in Hafer House for great food for body, mind, and spirit!
