(Sorry, just heard that one at an elementary school holiday concert…)
 
I also heard something else at that concert. When asked why she volunteered to help students with autism sing their holiday songs in addition to her own, a 3rd grader responded, “because we belong to each other.” Kids these days.
 
So, if you need a break from the never-ending news cycle or an antidote to the toxicity of our politics and, frankly, our society at times, I encourage you to spend time with our students, our teachers and staff, and our larger school communities who live the words of Dr. King’s observation that "darkness cannot drive out darkness—only light can do that."
 
Students like these Taft High School students who delivered over 700 gifts to Telfair Elementary, where many of their kids are experiencing homelessness. They know they belong to each other. 
 
As we head into winter break, I want to wish you and yours a happy holiday and a joyful new year. May 2020 be a year of light and belonging for us all.

'Tis the season for student performances! We made our way around the BD4 elementary school winter concert circuit—from Gardner Street, to Wonderland Ave, Marquez, Walgrove, Loyola Village, and Lanai Road. 
Wrapping up the year with student recognitions
We are always thrilled to celebrate the talents and achievements of our studentsincluding recognizing academic scholars at the Venice High Jackets of Excellence ceremony, awarding young artists from local elementary schools at the annual Venice Sign Lighting, and congratulating the 39 LAUSD elementary schools recently named California Distinguished Schools (and shout-out to the 5 BD4 schools on the list)!
