JOIN OVER 3,000 PARENT LEADERS TO AMPLIFY OUR #PARENTPRIORITIES

At the PAVE Parent Policy Summit in June, parent leaders from across the District came together to set THEIR agenda by voting the two issues they wanted to prioritize in the coming year. The #ParentPriorities for this year are:

  1. Mental Health Supports and Trauma-Informed Training in All Schools
  2. Increased Access to Specialized School Programs

But choosing the issues was just the beginning!

Getting to WORK

Throughout the fall, parent leaders have worked hard to unpack the policy context around each of their two chosen issues. Parents participated in monthly Parent Leader in Education (PLE) Board meetings where they gained insight on the current system and policies, the challenges that exist across the system, and what our city would need to do to overcome those challenges.

PAVE parent leaders also made it clear that they wanted to hear from more voices in the community outside of their PLE Boards. PAVE hosted Satellite Summits to share more about in-demand Specialized School Programs and ask about what types of programs and solutions families from all across DC want to see in their communities.

As a result, this year PAVE made over 200 touchpoints with parents to hear their thoughts on Specialized School Programs!

Getting to Solutions

After bringing together all of this research and listening to diverse perspectives, PLE Board members drafted a collective Statement of Beliefs around each priority outlining what they want to be true in our education system.

These statements identify a set of solutions for each of these critical issues so that, as a city, we can better care for all of our kids and provide equitable resources in all of our schools.

Mental Health Supports and Trauma-Informed Training in All Schools

Our Beliefs

As parent leaders at PAVE, we believe that all students, families, and staff should feel welcome, accepted, supported, and cared for in our schools.

At the core of our beliefs are the following pillars:

  1. Everyone should feel safe
  2. We should all promote mental wellness

  3. Communities and families are critical partners

  4. We are all responsible for our kids

Increased Access to Specialized School Programs

Our Beliefs

As parents, we believe that when it comes to education, one size does not fit all. Each of our children have unique talents, interests, and learning styles. We want to see more specialized school programs options so that ALL parents can find the best fit for each of their children.

We also believe that specialized school programs are as much an employment issue as they are an education issue. With so much emphasis being placed on STEM/language/trade skills in the real world, that focus is not trickling down to the classroom. Through specialized studies that take students right from the classroom to the real world experiences, students begin to see career opportunities open up.

At the core of these beliefs are the following pillars:

  1. Access must be equitable

  2. Specialized school programs should be enriching and supportive learning environments that serve the whole child

  3. Families are critical partners in both the creation and success of specialized school programs
