New Year. New Decade. New Approaches. New You.

You’ve made it through another year. Congratulations!  As you settle into 2020, I’m sending warm wishes for a year full of love, creativity, fun, accomplishment and personal growth.

Here are ten ideas and recommendations to help make your 2020 as rich and fulfilling as possible.
  1. Be on a quest for meaning rather than happiness. I loved this brief piece on why the quest for meaning serves us better than the quest for happiness. Learn how “OPA” – Others, Purpose, Attitude – can be your pathway to better work and life.

  2. Practice doing one thing at a time. Busy is the new normal. Typically our sense of busyness results from thinking about one thing while doing another. Read these tips on how you can gain better control of your busy state of mind by holding your focus on the task at hand.

  3. Purchase The 5-Minute Journal. A client told me about this fantastic – and simple – book that provides 3 questions to ponder at the beginning and end of each day. They'll help frame your days in the most positive and powerful ways. I love it! Purchase here or at Amazon

  4. Bounce back from rejection faster. We all get rejected … it’s unavoidable, in work and in life. The always brilliant Adam Grant shares approaches to bouncing back more quickly from the inevitable setback or breakdown.

  5. Change your story to change your life. I wasn’t familiar with Lori Gottleib – author of the Dear Therapist column in The Atlantic – but she nails it in this excellent TED talk about how we can change our destiny by re-thinking how we tell our story.

  6. Take a stab at writing your career mission statement. Every thriving business or organization has a mission statement. Guess what? You need one too. Here are some simple tips to crafting yours, an effort that will bring clarity to all that you do.

  7. Commit to a morning routine that sets you up for success. One of the most important practices in my life is my morning routine, which includes meditation, visualization, reading, stretching and… coffee. Whatever your formula is, establishing rituals that anchor your day is game-changing. I loved this piece and this one on setting morning practices that power your day.

  8. Be intentional about everything you do. If you know me, you know that intention is one of my core approaches to living a better life. Setting an intention is making a determination to act in a way that fosters something you care about. The clearer your intentions are as you head into any conversation, meeting or experience, the more likely you are to realize what matters most.

  9. Give advice in a manner people will accept.  Friends and co-workers often seek our advice, but that doesn’t mean they’re ready to take it. Here’s a field guide to giving advice the right way.

  10. Make 2020 the year where you raise your voice and take action. We live in challenging times. Whatever issue you care about – politics, climate, education, health, gun violence, equality – commit yourself to showing up for what matters to you. I always say that the way we show up one place is the way we show up everyplace, so get out there and do something good for the world.
Here’s to an amazing year ahead!
