SGSUP and The College recognize Dean's Medalist

Please join us in congratulating Adrienne Gosnell who was recently recognized for her scholastic achievements by being named a Dean's Medal recipient.

Departments and schools from around The College select a graduating student who has exhibited consistent dedication to academic excellence throughout their time at ASU to receive the prestigious Dean’s Medal in honor of their achievements. Medals are worn with their graduation regalia as they lead their fellow graduates during the processional.

Described by faculty as a big-picture thinker with diverse academic interests and a passion for learning, Gosnell was attracted to geography because of its numerous intersectionalities with other disciplines.

Gosnell’s passion for the field led her to become both a mapping intern for USAID, where she helped disaster zones with planning and recovery, analyzed improper land use and abuse of nature reserves and tracked the relationship between farming practices and food security in rural areas.

Now a member of the American Association of Geographers, her current research interests include agroecology and aquaculture, and the future of food security, biodiversity, natural resource management and resilience.

Congratulations, Adrienne!

PhD student participates in UN Convention

Peter Crank, a geography PhD candidate and climatologist, found his seat in a packed convention hall in Madrid, Spain, opened his laptop and listened with intent as nearly 400 United Nation delegates from around the world negotiated policy to address global climate change.

The science underpinnings discussed were already familiar to Crank, he instead focused on how it was being framed and communicated for decision making by international leaders.

“Knowing the policy outcomes that could come from the general climate science work that I do affects how I frame problems,” Crank said. “It affects how I design my research and how I communicate my results to people. I want to be able to tie my research with the long-term goal of potentially being able to influence U.N. decisions.”

Earlier this month, Crank represented the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning as an observing delegate at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, known as COP25.

The annual conference is the gathering of the nearly 200 countries that make up the U.N. to discuss international action on climate change. It is from this conference that landmark international treaties such as the 1998 Kyoto Protocol and the 2016 Paris Climate agreement were produced.

Crank along with a delegation of eight other ASU students – five from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, three from the School of Sustainability – were chosen to represent the University based on his or her articulation of how attending the convention would help deepen their work and contribute to the larger ASU community.

Hondula recognized for work in preventing heat deaths

David Hondula, assistant professor in SGSUP, has been named one of the 2019 UCS Science Defenders by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

The Union of Concerned Scientists is a national nonprofit organization founded 50 years ago by scientists and students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with the mission of using rigorous, independent science to solve the planet's most pressing problems.

Hondula and two of his community partners
Stacey Champion, a climate activist, and Vjollca Berisha, an epidemiologist with Maricopa County were selected for this honor due to their combined efforts to provide evidence-based recommendations for managing extreme heat in Maricopa County with the goal of reducing heat-related deaths in the region.

“If we want to understand how climate and health risks are going to evolve in the future, we need to figure out what should be the simplest story—heat and health—first. People’s lives are on the line,” said Hondula.

Congratulations to all for this well-deserved honor!
