Note from the Board of Directors

There’s a lot to be proud of as we look back over the past year.

From our start in the Junction to our current location in Parkdale, we continue to grow in ways big and small. Our bustling Thrift Shop sells low-cost technology to hundreds of customers every month (over the years, we’ve refurbished more than 2,000 computers) and, as an OES-certified reuse/refurbish centre, we can accept more than 30 types of electronics.

As an Employment Social Enterprise, Free Geek Toronto provides supported training, employment and mentorship to community members seeking to enhance their skills and employability. Over the years, we’re proud to have supported close to 50 participants through employment opportunities and training.

Regeneration, reuse, and recycling are core Free Geek values that also form the basis of the circular economy. In the coming years, managing and reducing electronic waste and the planned obsolescence of much of our technology will become increasingly pressing issues for the communities we support. We’ll continue using Free and Open Source Software to put technology back into circulation while ensuring e-waste is recycled responsibly to help not only our communities but the environment as well.

This past year saw us grow in a lot of ways and we’re incredibly proud of the work we’ve accomplished with our community partners. Next year on April 22—Earth Day,  2020—the Free Geek movement will celebrate its 20th year. We’re excited to see where we take Free Geek Toronto in the next ten years!

HOLIDAY HOURS

Free Geek Toronto will be closed Dec 22 - Jan 1

Starting in January 2020, Free Geek Toronto’s hours are changing.

Wednesday through Saturday 12 - 6

We’re closed Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays

Thanks to everyone supporting Free Geek Toronto we were able to re-start our Hardware Grant program. So far we've donated 42 computers in 2019, including one to the Toronto Tool Library's Makerspace.

Currently, we're limiting grants to small community non-profits/grassroots organizations.

2019 Activities

2019 was a busy year at Free Geek: we hosted or took part in more than 20 events, a significant increase from 2018.

The year started with a workshop on privacy basics hosted by Free Geek Toronto volunteer Will Campbell, the first of many Will offered throughout the year.

February was a busy month with four events, including our digital literacy and storytelling intensive with East Scarborough Storefront and the York Region Repair Café NewMakeIt.

In the Spring, we participated in the Evergreen Brickwork’s Spring Drop, Swap and Shop, hosted an Earth Week sale, held a Linux installation workshop, and even made it into the news!

We really ramped it up in the summer: we hosted an eCommerce branding workshop at our Parkdale community space with industry expert Erika Geremia, voted in new board members at our Annual General Meeting, and Executive Director Ryan Fukunaga visited the Free Geeks in Portland and Vancouver to see first-hand the great work they’re doing in their communities!

We stayed busy in the fall, hosting another privacy workshop, collected electronics at the 11th EcoFair at the Barns, and celebrated with our partners at the ImpactDriver 2019 fundraiser in support of Toronto Tool Library and IRBE Makerspace.

Finally, we finished the year with an electronics collection at Fiix Software to support Giving Tuesday.

2019 By the Numbers

  • Over 50 volunteers
  • 250 participants in 14 Computer Hardware Basics and Disassembly workshops offered through the Toronto Public Library
  • An appearance by our Executive Director before the Senate Subcommittee on the Charitable Sector
  • Top 5 spot in Centre for Social Innovation’s Agents of Change - Climate Solution Pitch Competition
  • 500 participants in our Free Geek Toronto events and workshops

Since 2009, Free Geek Toronto has been promoting social and economic justice, focusing on marginalized populations in the Greater Toronto area.

Our vision is to make our city a place where e-waste is disposed of responsibly, safely and ethically, and where everyone has access to computers and the Internet.
