Wishing you all the very best for a safe and happy holiday season and New Year!

                                  THE WORKSHOP IS BACK!

At last, the workshop is back under the same roof as the shop!  The extension works went much quicker than anticipated and we are very happy with the way it has turned out.  It is great to have everyone back "home" once again and to have our violin makers here to discuss your instrument with you when you come in.

INSTRUMENT FEATURE - Antonio Capella violin

A renowned name in modern violin making, Antonio learned the craft from his father, Domingos. Achieving a fine reputation in his own right, Antonio has passed the craft on to his son, Joaquim, who continues the tradition.

This violin was made in Portugal in 1975. Its tone is full and rich, sonorous with good carrying power. The sound has been described as “exciting” and “electric”; it clearly invites adventure! Evenly balanced across the strings, it offers full resonance throughout the entire range, effortless and rapid response to the bow, and excellent playability generally.

This violin comprises strikingly beautiful tonewoods covered in a hallmark reflective, warm gold varnish, and attractive flaming on the maple back. It is currently set up with Evah Pirazzi strings, a lightweight Wittner chinrest and tailpiece, and rosewood pegs with mother-of-pearl eye.

A fine violin for the discerning advanced or professional player.

BOWS, INSTRUMENTS and NATURAL RESOURCES

What materials used in string instruments are restricted, and what does that mean for musicians?  Are we going to run out of pernambuco? What can we do to -protect our natural resources, while still being able to enjoy the high-quality materials in our instruments?

Alex discusses these and and other such questions, in the article you can read here HERE.
