Dear Friends of GIG,

it has been an exciting close of the year at GIG and we have much in store for you in 2020!

Our very first edition of DOTS The Impact Summit that we hosted together with r0g_agency took place in Kenya and came with a lot of exciting outcomes that will keep us busy in the upcoming months.

Additionally our "Young Innovators and Migration" project is finishing with a bang, releasing both freshly updated and translated content on Wikipedia and a Whitepaper with recommendations for policy makers in the migration field. And of course we're already preparing for new things to come in the new year, re:publica 2020, CoAct and Radio Amnesia being only a few of them.

In this sense we wish you a happy festive season! We hope you enjoy some peaceful down time and we are looking forward to seeing you again in 2020!

We are what we create together.

This was DOTS. The Impact Summit!

From the 5th to the 7th of December, over 60 people from all across the world gathered in Nakuru, Kenya for DOTS. The Impact Summit, hosted by the Global Innovation Gathering (GIG), and r0g Agency for Open Culture and Critical Transformation (r0g).

The solutions developed and showcased during the summit ranged anywhere from ideas and prototypes, to working interventions that had incredible stories of impact behind them. The spirit of openness and inclusivity were core to this convening, and the various working groups sought to share best management practices, demonstrate the application of open source technologies in various contexts, and form collaborative teams around strategic project ideas. You can find more impressions in our blog post or on our Facebook and Twitter channels!

What’s Next: Outcomes from DOTS. The Impact Summit

At DOTS. The Impact Summit  we used the power of a gathering to co-create and kick off long-term projects that offer collaborative solutions to systemic problems in different localities. Together we worked on the following tracks:

Among the outcomes were a proposal for a joint strategy to develop a Global Hub Edition of the Glassroom Experience, a draft framework for the design of open science hackathons, a collection of case studies of successful hackathons for peacebuilding, plans for a PeaceHackCamp in Nigeria, partnerships to promote Sustainable Making in 2020 and a prototype for a Life Sensor.

#BorgaLife: Our "Young Innovators and Migration" project is coming to a close

Between July and December 2019 our project “Young Innovators: Using Digital Media to inform about Regular and Irregular Migration Issues” took place. Together with our partner organisations Kumasi Hive, Impact Hub Accra and Wikimedia Ghana User Group and with the support of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany

After conducting desktop research and interviews with young innovators we created, updated and translated Wikipedia articles on migration into local languages Twi, Hausa and Ewe in two Editathon events at Kumasi Hive and Impact Hub Accra. Under the hashtag #BorgaLife the outcomes of these events are currently shared on social media.

In a roundtable event in Accra, we identified opportunities and formulate recommendations that served as inputs for this a paper that will be disseminated as part of the project’s final phase!

Radio Amnesia: Support Indigenous Communication in Brazil

Amnesia is a network of free radios, web sites and itinerant radio experiences that believe in access to media production and content dissemination as a tool to achieve the fundamental rights of life in society, especially for indigenous and original communities.

Today the physical integrity of Brazil’s indigenous communities and traditional people and their rights over ancestral lands and natural resources are under constant threat. Amnesia contributes to the physical and legal safety and integrity of indigenous populations in these communities, by teaching tools, uses and procedures for secure and private communication.

ASAP: re:publica Berlin 2020

The 14th re:publica Berlin will take place from May 6-8th under the motto ASAP (as soon as possible).

With an even greater urgency than usual #rp20 will highlight issues relating to sustainable digital infrastructure as a human right, which in today's world is a prerequisite for social participation. We question prolonged processes in terms of resource efficiency and renewable alternative energies. We focus on the most important social, economic, and ecological issues that are increasingly endangering a free and peaceful society. We seek dialogues on issues of global climate change, migration policy, nationalism, and racism, and discuss the parameters decisive to socio-political turbulence and economic dynamics.

As GIG we will be hosting the Makerspace at rp20 and participate in various tracks.

Save the Date asap!
