"My mother passed away after I recorded her memories last year"
“My inspiration and motivation comes from my parents’ stories. I have listened to a host of their experiences in pre-independence India, migration to Pakistan and building their lives from scratch,” explains Jawwad Zaki. Earlier this year, he launched his own #ChasingMemories campaign:

“My father was helped by his Sikh friends when he was in a refugee camp. My mother's family was helped by their Hindu & Sikh neighbours to save their lives and leave their home in time before an attack. My mother passed away after I recorded her memories last year. “Of course, Partition was a violent time and that aspect is mostly also found in published works.
“Comparatively less is written about this positive side of human nature and bonding. “I feel it is important that this oral history is preserved for generations to come. Most importantly because, these oral histories bring out the most human aspects of the events in 1947.”
Jawwad will plant one tree for every donation you make to his campaign. His campaign is nearly complete! He is in a race against time to preserve these memories.
