TALK:
MOON MISSIONS and MORE
Presented by Tira Shubart

MONDAY, JANUARY 6, 5 PM
MX$90 (M) MX$130 (NM)

As NASA talks about a return to the moon within a few years and the US and Europeans have been sending satellites — and robots — throughout the solar system, there is a renewed interest, and ability, to search for extraterrestrial life. It won't be little green men but there is increasing evidence that at least two of the moons of Jupiter & Saturn may have molecular compounds that indicate life. And new discoveries on Mars show that the red planet may have hosted life in the past.

The talk would include the planned Artemis manned missions to the moon scheduled for 2024. That mission includes using resources like the ice water we know exists frozen in the moon's craters and the establishment of a manned base for exploration of other planets. All very exciting and science fiction-y plans that are really happening.

Tira Shubart is London based journalist who has covered stories in over fifty countries worldwide. She also trains journalists for the BBC and other international broadcasters around the world. Her hobby is astrophysics and space and she works as an 'Ambassador' at the Science Museum where she gives talks on space and other topics. READ MORE.

VOLUNTEERING: FOR DOGS
Presented by Tanya Lapierre

TUESDAY, JANUARY 7, 5 PM, FREE

Ever wander down the street and wonder if the dog laying on the side of the road sleeping through the afternoon sun has a home? Do you see dogs outside your house and think: Why are they here now and where did they come from? How can I get them fixed? Are you curious about what the laws are related to roof dogs, street dogs, your neighbour's aggressive and obnoxious Chihuahua? Wonder if you should ever pick up the starving dog on the side of the road and "save" him? Curious about what organizations exist to help street animals and beloved pets in Oaxaca?

Come and learn about these things and more.

Tanya Lapierre started working with dogs about 7 years ago in Toronto, Canada, with a foster organization called Speaking of Dogs. READ MORE.

TALK:
HOW TO COME TO MEXICO (in 1534)
Presented by David Gitlitz

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8, 5 PM
MX$90 (M) MX$ 130 (NM)

You think travel today is a drag? Booking flights on the internet. Long lines at airports. Tight security. Packed in like sardines 6-abreast in tourist class. And of course those tasty, nutritious “snacks.” You don’t know how good you’ve got it!

Follow with David the journey in 1534 of an immigrant family from their village on the Portuguese-Spanish border to Mexico City. What sorts of transport were available to them? How did they find a vessel and secure passage? What was life on shipboard like? What did they eat, and how did they amuse themselves, and how did they deal with those inevitable bodily functions? Where did they stop, and why? What awaited them in San Juan de Ulúa, a short skiff and a jump from Veracruz? And the terrors, and the challenges, and the discomforts, and the marvels of the trek from the coastal sands to their half-built lodgings on the Calle Tacuba in the colonial capital! Whew!

David Gitlitz worked for a number of universities in the US, Latin America, and Europe as a professor (literature, history, anthropology) and an administrator (program director, department chair, dean, academic vice president). READ MORE.

WORKSHOP:
INTRODUCTION to BIOGRAPHICAL STORYTELLING
Presented by Karla Freeman

THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 4-6 PM on the Terraza
FREE — Limited to 20 participants

We each have stories. We tell stories about our lives to friends, strangers and sometimes to anyone who will listen.  Sometimes eyes glaze over and we feel disappointed that we are not being heard. Then sadly, sometimes we stop telling stories altogether.

In this presentation, Karla will discuss the art and craft of storytelling. She will perform a ten-minute personal story and talk about the skills for crafting stories hopefully without losing your audience, including structure and story elements. In addition to discussion, there will be opportunities to practice telling stories. This is a presentation for those who want to gain storytelling skills while having fun.

Karla Freeman divides her time between Dublin and Oaxaca and offers storytelling performances and workshops in both. She has worked in Europe, South America and now in Mexico. Her love of cultures, words and sharing led to her work in storytelling. She attended the International School of Storytelling in Forrest Row, England and learned the craft and art of biographical storytelling from master storytellers in Crete. She feels inspired by peoples' stories and wants to support you in telling stories well.

BOOK PRESENTATION BY AUTHOR:
Donna Hanelin

FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 5 PM, FREE

This Line We Follow, a book of poetry, includes narratives of nightmares and dreams, coming of age, and environmental change. Lyric poems picture life in Mexico, contemporary culture, and the influence and inspiration of children, grandchildren, lovers and dear friends.

The book is divided into six sections each beginning with an illustrated page of prose about what helps to keep poetry alive. A poem does not stand on its own. It lives in the continuum of all poetry, in its connection to the individual reader, and as a frame for the understanding of the poet herself.

Donna Hanelin teaches creative writing in northern California and has been offering writing retreats and classes in Oaxaca since 1997. READ MORE.

WHAT'S THAT BIRD?: BIRDWATCHING
in and AROUND OAXACA CITY

Presented by Frances Wood

MONDAY, JANUARY 20, 5 PM
MX$90 (M) MX$130 (NM)

Frances Wood returns to help us learn about and appreciate the amazing birdlife in the Oaxaca area...the common birds that we often see here in town and as well as the extraordinary birds that are unique to this area. Frances has been developing additions to this lecture based on the common questions that new and experienced birders often ask. Her presentation will feature bird photos by Evelyn Carey.

Frances Wood has been birding in Mexico for over 20 years. She inherited her love of nature from her writer-naturalist father and a mother who loved to garden. Writer, artist, teacher, and mother of two sons, Frances completed the Master Birding course offered by Seattle Audubon, which sent her headlong into the all-consuming world of an avid birdwatcher. Each winter since 1990, she has traveled or lived in Latin America, participating in conservation projects, training local nature guides, or just feeding her birdwatching habit. Frances' book, Brushed by Feathers: A Year of Birdwatching in the West, was published in 2004.

MX$90 (M) MX$130 (NM)

"Statistics show that for every job that is created in the distillery there are 5 indirect jobs created. We now have 15 people working in the distillery which creates 75 indirect jobs. I have observed that every worker goes home with their paycheck and they feed an average of 3 people in their family. So 90 people get a paycheck and 270 people eat 3 meals a day, every day that we work. It is very gratifying to know that Sierra Norte is benefiting the community with the new jobs that are created."
Doug French

Doug French, a second generation US citizen living in Oaxaca, will be talking about his commitment to help improve the social economic conditions in Oaxaca. Along with his mother, Roberta French, they began this challenge with textiles, subsequently Doug moved on to mezcal and now with whiskey.
