2019 VC investment projected to exceed €40 billion in Europe & Israel

In 2019, venture capital investment in European & Israeli companies is projected to exceed €40 billion according to preliminary Dealroom data. A new record by far. Even more impressive: it's the biggest percentage increase (42%!) since at least 2014. Much of this is driven by mega-rounds. Below is an overview of the biggest rounds of 2019 (customise the filters to exclude biotechnology and Israel, for example):

These 27 startups achieved unicorn status in Europe & Israel this year

Along with big rounds come new unicorns. In 2019, 27 European & Israeli startups crossed the $1 billion valuation mark. Over a third of these are Fintech startups, followed by Enterprise Software companies (23%). Check the complete list of new unicorns in 2019 here:

What to expect from 2020? Record amounts of capital are ready to be deployed in Europe

European venture capital firms raised over €12 billion in new funds in 2019, a new record. Rocket Internet, EQT, and Lakestar topped the list with new funds of €900M, €660M and $700M ready to be invested in the coming years. On top of European VC firms, there's been a dramatic rise in investment activity from corporate investorsSoftbank and Insight Partners will likely remain highly active in 2020. Meanwhile, other US & Asian investors will likely accelerate their European activity in 2020. On top of all this, the European Commission and several national European governments have announced big initiatives.

But... where were the venture backed exits in 2019? What will 2020 look like?

In 2018, European venture was spoiled with big exits like Spotify and Adyen. Total venture backed exits even came close to the USA. 2019, however, was a relatively slow year for exits.
