ESCI Newsletter - Number 33 - December 2019

Dear ESCI members,
dear friends

As we closely approach the end of the year, it is now time to look at the past and prepare the future.
Once more, this year we had a vibrant annual meeting, this time in Coimbra, Portugal. With close to 500 participants, the ESCI meeting contained four different pre-meeting courses, covering topics such as biostatistics, cellular respirometry or cardiology, as well as different symposia covering topics such as mitochondrial biology, phagocytes, hepatology and lifestyle-related diseases, cardiology, stem cells and tissue engineering, bioinformatics and machine learning, as well as the neurobiology of aging. Social programmes were very well participated, including a meeting dinner, and two musical moments from student from the University of Coimbra, including playing Fado. Again, we delivered our usual ESCI prizes, ranging from the Bioart award to the most cited paper in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation, and including of course, the best Research Awards. Excellent talks from Dr. Michael Loudon (opening) and Dr. Alexandre Quintanilha (closing) were also very enjoyed by the participants. The already usual “Champion’s League for Biomedical questions was again a great success and with four University teams competing for the gold. Finally a word of acknowledgement to all that contributed to the success of this meeting including Marliese and Debbie at the Central Office, the Barcelo team and of course all the volunteers that sweated to have everything going smoothly.
The future brings more novelties. A new Annual Meeting is under preparation, in order to bring everybody together again, this time in Bari. Italy, again in May 2020. We are also going to open in the beginning of the year some new funding schemes including grants for exploratory projects, funding for small outreach initiatives, fellowships to bring young researchers to present their best works (which should have been presented at the ESCI meeting) and finally funds for short stays of researchers in different institution in order to get proper training in translational medicine. We believe that this will contribute to ESCI role as to build bridges between fundamental science and clinical investigation in the key areas of the Society, as well as to contribute to the training of young scientists and clinicians.
Another of our objectives for the next year is to increase the number of members, highlighting the their advantages including free access to the contents of the European Journal of Clinical Investigation, much lower prices for the registration at the Annual Meeting, and finally having exclusive contents.
Ultimately, our objective is to strengthen the impact of the European Journal of Clinical Investigation, currently already a Q1 journal, introducing some new areas. To implement this change, the journal has a new Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Hendrik Nathoe, who replaces Dr. John Ioanidis , the EiC for the past ten years. So, please submit your best work to our flagship journal.
Have nice Holidays and all the best for the New Year. Looking forward to see you in Bari.

Best regards

Paulo J. Oliveira, Ph.D.
ESCI President
