January 2020 Newsletter

Greetings!

The Word of God was not ashamed to become human since He had made us in His image. We are like gloves He made to fit His hands. Nor was He ashamed to clothe Himself in matter, for He had created this wonderful world of atoms as a revelation of His love and wisdom. So how wonderful it is to have a ministry fashioning matter into icons.

What has been happening in our little Shrewsbury studio since the last Newsletter? Jim Blackstone (www.dunstanicons.com) moved to Shrewsbury a year ago to study under me, and has made splendid progress.

He now shares the English Bridge studio with Martin and myself, and is receiving commissions. So, along with Lisa Abbott (www.lisasacredicons.com), Shrewsbury now sports four iconographers!

In the midst of working on different projects this year I had a successful hip replacement. This gave me  some time and space during recuperation to begin working on a large book about festal icons, to be published by Gracewing. Hopefully it will be ready in print later next year. Watch this space!  Also, the BBC World Service have just broadcast a 30 minute interview I gave with Phil Pegum, “In the Studio: Creating an Icon”.  It can be listened to at any time on their website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3csz1zm

 WORKSHOPS

Martin has been invited to run two mosaic courses this year - one in Calgary, Canada (August 17 - 22), and the other on Lesvos, Greece (September 17 - 24).

These week long workshops will be opportunities to create mosaic studies using the finest materials while learning about the principles of the Byzantine technique.

They are particularly well suited to icon painters who want to start making mosaic work but would be accessible to anyone who wants to learn more about this ancient craft.

Examples of Martin's mosaic work can be seen at www.martinearle.com

WROUGHT IRON ICON SCREEN

The retractable wrought iron icon screen at St Clement’s Church in Cambridge for the Orthodox community of St Ephraim is now installed. Thankfully it  works smoothly, and can be easily folded away when not in use. Frazer Picot is currently working to complete the decorative panels below the icons. The Anglican parish like the screen so much that they now want to keep it open during the day for visitors to enjoy.

SAINT AIDAN TRIPTYCH AND RECENT ICONS

You can see some of my recent icons below. A particular challenge was designing and painting the multi-figure icon commissioned by my beloved Shadid family in Houston, Texas.

Also just completed is a triptych of St Aidan of Lindisfarne with scenes of his life. He was a great missionary saint, but through the icon he is going all the way to China to be with its commissioner!

ELEVEN STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM THE PRINCE’S FOUNDATION SCHOOL OF TRADITIONAL ART ICON PROGRAMME 2016-2019

Congratulations to the students who completed their three years on the icon programme with a splendid Graduation Show at PFSTA in Shoreditch. The overall standard was very high. Some of their icons then went on to be displayed in the window of the famous L. Cornelissen’s art suppliers on Great Russell Street near the British Museum. May the Lord and source of beauty continue to inspire these wonderful students!

OTHER WORK FROM THE STUDIO

Among other icon projects, Martin completed a triptych for an altar dedicated to the Lancaster Martyrs at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Lancaster (more images on his new website) and this icon of the great St Willibrord for the Catholic chaplaincy at Hull University. He is also preparing to start a wall painting project in the new year at St Francis church, Baddesley Clinton.
Watercolour designs for the North and South walls of the sanctuary.
