December Highlight | 2020 Strategic Plan
In accordance with the orthopedic collaborative plan, a team of eight physicians was convened to determine the strategic direction of orthopedic research within HealthPartners. The group was led by Brad Nelson, MD (UMP) and the members included Paul Johnson, MD (HP); Leif Solberg, MD (HP); Julie Switzer, MD (UMP); Todd Johnson, MD (HP); Marc Swiontkowski, MD (UMP); Karen Margolis, MD (HP); and Brian Cunningham, MD (UMP). Each member of the group met with identified key stakeholders to gather information regarding areas of knowledge deficit and opportunities for innovation in musculoskeletal care. Key stakeholders included Nico Pronk; Steve Connelly, MD; Tom Walsh, MD; Steve Housh; Jeff Husband, MD; Ed Craig, MD; Peter Cole, MD; Shaun Frost, MD (and other health plan medical leaders); Terri Chmielewski, PhD, PT; and Lisa Schroeder.
Information received from stakeholders was compiled and the strategic planning group identified areas of focus including value, patient reported outcomes, physician behavior, pain management, geriatric fractures, and stem cells/ortho biologics. This group then ranked these areas to arrive at our top three priorities. Next the group identified knowledge within the HealthPartners system as well as knowledge deficits.
The strategic research plan was built upon the foundation of conducting research that supports the triple aim of improving the patient experience of care (including quality and satisfaction); improving the health of populations; and reducing the per capita cost of health care.
Our research teams across Orthopedics are already developing plans to further this work in 2020. A group of leaders across orthopedics will meet on a quarterly basis to check-in on the progress and continue to support the team doing this great work!

Q&A
What is a favorite holiday memory?
This would be one of the first traveling experiences as a young kid, my parents were taking us to Hawaii for Christmas, and I was very anxious that the trip would be cancelled due to weather. I vividly remember the transport from the temperature being around -25 degrees to the amazing warmth and warm welcome receiving the lei walking off the airplane.
What is the best advice you have received?
Luke 12:48
For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required; and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
Name something you are looking forward to in 2020.
I will be taking my wife to Hawaii for her first visit there. Also, looking forward to getting my youngest daughter to sleep more.
