18 December, from Ku-ring-gai command: A timely reminder from us here at Kuring Gai Police Area Command
We are still getting a large number of ‘steal from motor vehicles’ throughout the command. Whether at home or at the shops, lock your vehicles and if you have valuables in your car then keep them hidden - better still, don't leave valuables in your vehicle. Let's not make it easy for the thief to steal from your car!
24 December, shared from Berowra Community Page group: Anyone know who this might belong to??

24 December, from Neighbourhood Watch Ku-ring-gai/Hornsby: Everyone here at Neighbourhood Watch wishes you a very festive, restive, happy, safe and secure holiday season!

24 December, from NSW Police: Police are urging the community to ensure they protect their home from opportunistic thieves throughout the Christmas holidays.

As summer is the most popular time for going on holidays, particularly over Christmas and New Year, NSW residents are reminded to take some time to assess their home security before they head away. Youth and Crime Prevention Commander, Superintendent Mark Wall, said break-ins are usually an opportunistic crime, and criminals will target homes with poor security.

“In the last-minute rush to get ready for Christmas celebrations, it can be easy to forget the basics of home safety and security,” Supt Wall said. “Whether you are going away for a day or a few weeks, you need to secure your home properly to avoid a financial – and emotional – disaster. “Most of the recommended precautions are very simple, particularly just checking to make sure doors and windows are locked and secured – an unlocked window in an empty home, full of valuables, is an opportunistic thief’s dream. “I’d also recommend limiting what you post on social media about your holiday, especially if your home will be unattended for an extended period. “For those who will be celebrating at home, you should still secure doors or windows in unoccupied areas of the home, especially parts of the house that are visible from the street.”

Supt Wall added that it was important to be vigilant with mail, which is another valuable target for thieves. “Criminals don’t necessarily need to be face to face to steal from you. If they have the right mail, it only takes a few steps for them to take your identity and access you bank accounts,” Supt Wall said. “It’s relatively inexpensive to put a good lock on your letterbox and ask someone you trust to empty it regularly – or organise to have your mail held at your local post office while your away.”

The NSW Police Force has a wealth of information about safety and security, including fact sheets, available here.

Holiday home safety and security tips:
• Let a trusted neighbour or family friend know of your whereabouts and contact details. Ask them to watch your home, empty your mailbox, mow your lawn and, most importantly, call Triple Zero (000) if they notice anything suspicious, or if a smoke alarm is activated.
• Dispose of Christmas wrapping and delivery/goods packaging carefully. Don’t advertise your new valuables to would-be thieves.
• Lock away your handyman/gardening tools, which may be used to force open doors or windows, and any item that may be used to gain access to the property or cause damage.
• Record descriptions, models and serial numbers of your valuables and then put them somewhere safe.
• Switch off and disconnect non-essential electrical appliances and IT equipment.
• Ensure any electrical items you decide to leave on continuously, or on timer circuits, are in good working order – that includes lights left on to deter thieves both inside and outside.
• Make sure that any lights you have left switched on are away from combustibles such as curtains and are of the right wattage to prevent overheating.
• Switch off and empty clothes dryers before you leave.
• Close all internal doors before you leave to help contain any fire that occurs.
• Pay bills in advance including electricity, gas, water, and telephone so that your supply continues while you're away.
• Avoid posting information about being away on holidays because thieves will often use this information to target properties.
• Be sure your home and contents insurance is adequate and up to date.
• Check your doors, windows and garage are locked securely, and remove spare keys from hiding places. As you leave, check everything again.
• Finally, if you have a home security alarm, activate it.

If your home has been broken into:
• Call your local police station immediately.
• Don't touch anything. Let police see your home exactly as the thief left it.
• While you are waiting for police to arrive, compile a list of what you think is missing; include brand names, model numbers, serial numbers, accurate descriptions and any engraving details.

If you have concerns about possible criminal activity in your local neighbourhood, call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page here. Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

23 December, from Crime Stoppers: Having issues with noisy neighbours?

This time of year can be a problem for noise issues. Neighbours throw more parties, the music is louder, and illegal fireworks get let off. For noise complaints you can contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.

For further information about noise time restrictions and what constitutes offensive noise see the NSW Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) here.

Tip for party goers: Remember to be aware of the fact that there are people around you who may not wish to participate in the level of noise that you are making. Consideration of others can go a very long way in keeping neighbourhood relationships positive and avoiding any knocks on your door by police.

21 December, from M1 Pacific Motorway: Multiple RFS staff/volunteers are asking us to urge motorists to keep left unless overtaking and don’t sit in the middle and right lane.
You are delaying volunteers and fire appliances heading South. It has been posted enough on here to keep left and now you may be putting lives at risk. Once you have finished overtaking move to the left unless the left lane is full. We also have other separate reports of motorists who are deliberately brake checking/blocking vehicles trying to overtake. We will happily post face pictures on this page if anyone is caught doing this. It’s not the time to be doing it.

20 December, from Neighbourhood Watch Australasia: *** 12 Days of Christmas Safety - Day 8***
If you're super organised you've no doubt finished all your Christmas shopping by now. For the rest of us, there's the inevitable last-minute dash around the shops to buy gifts and food. All this extra shopping provides lots of opportunities for thieves to take advantage and we don't want that to happen to you. Read on for our top 7 tips to make your Christmas shopping safer and happier:

🛍 Don't carry a lot of cash with you. Cards are safer at this time of year but make sure you always know where yours is. If you notice your card is missing, report it right away.
🛍 Leave good jewellery at home; this isn't the time to stand out.
🛍 Stay away from ATM's and you'll avoid a favourite thief hangout.
🛍 Never leave your handbag unattended in a shopping trolly or anywhere else. Keep it close.
🛍 Lock your shopping in the boot and out of sight.
🛍Fumbling for keys in your handbag makes you an easy target so have your keys in hand before you head for the car.
🛍 Lock the doors as soon as you're in the car.

Wishing you a safe and happy Christmas season from your friends at Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.

20 December: Shared, thanks to Greg: Total fire ban rules - for tradies!!! (And DIY'ers)
Several times this week I have had to stop trades people from grinding on a total fire ban day (Toban). Any activity that produces a spark is banned. Even if it is inside (or beneath) a building - I verified this with the RFS. If you have to create a flame or spark, you need a hot works permit (which won't likely be given). On days where fire danger indexes are high, trades people creating a spark, or flame, are expected to have a hose nearby. I asked the fire control centre to confirm this!

Your Fires Near Me app gives you toban alerts. Pay attention to them! As a home owner, you could be liable if you allow your tradie to cut, grind or create a flame! For your sake, and the rest of this community, drag your tradie into line and make sure they DO NOT create sparks or flames. Report them if they insist. Just a friendly reminder to all.

Page 7: Jail for punching and kicking police

A DOMINOS pizza deliverer, who had been selected as part of a Sony Music program for the gifted and talented has landed a 16-month jail sentence after assaulting police officers in Hornsby. Jordan Carlin, 19, of Blackwall on the Central Coast, appeared at Hornsby Court by video link on Wednesday after pleading guilty to a series of assault charges over incidents on September 25 and October 19. In court on Wednesday, magistrate Bruce Williams revealed details about the violent assault on police, which included Mr Carlin kicking one officer in the face at Hornsby Mall. The 34-year-old officer was taken to Hornsby Hospital where he was treated for a broken nose and facial lacerations. Full story on Page 7 (link above).

Page 7: Wait in custody on drug charges

THE alleged mastermind of a sophisticated drug ring that saw Hornsby-based brothel workers sell drugs to clients will remain behind bars over Christmas in what his lawyer has described as “lazy police work”. Jun Jia, 28, of Strathfield, did not appear at Hornsby Local Court last week with his lawyer grilling prosecutors for “failing to provide a brief of evidence on the third appearance of the case”. His lawyer, John Khan, said several police statements relating to the case were outstanding, including a brief of evidence surrounding telephone interception. Full story on Page 7 (link above).

NORMANHURST Emergency services raced to treat a motorbike rider following a horror incident on Tuesday, about 9am on Pennant Hills Rd. Doctors were forced to perform urgent blood transfusions at the scene. Police say the motorbike rider was filtering between traffic and when traffic began to move slowly, the bike got tangled with a truck which took off and the rider went under. The man, 41, was treated at the scene by CareFlight doctors before being rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital by road ambulance. The man was suspected of having broken legs and abdominal injuries.

BEROWRA Police received reports of items being stolen from a BP Service Station in Berowra between 8pm on Friday and 7.15am on Tuesday. It’s believe a person or persons took two floor jacks which were located in the external yard of the station. The jacks were secured together with steel cable. Police are investigating the incident and will look into any possible CCTV footage.

It appears nothing was stolen and there was no one at the station at the time of the incident.

THORNLEIGH A teenager from Thornleigh will face court later this month over a series of offences including malicious damage and enter vehicle without consent of the owner. Police reports note the incidents happened on Sunday, December 8, and last Tuesday. He has been refused bail with the matter adjourned to a later date in December.

He has been granted conditional bail and is set to appear at the local court in January.

Taken from "Our 20 Favourite Crime Prevention Tips for the Festive Season":

Tip#15:
Beware allowing parcels to be delivered to your empty house doorstep. Thieves follow delivery vans. Consider requesting a FREE 24/7 parcel locker, or have mail held at the local post office. Maybe ask family or neighbours to help out?
Tip#16: Consider the deterrent of a dog. Put a dog bowl, warning sign, lead, tennis ball etc. at the front of your property. Consider a plug-in that attaches to sensor lighting and emulates a dog barking. See other 20 Tips for your home on our
nhwkuringgaihornsby.org.au/tips/ website.
Tip#17: If you are going on a road trip, check your car’s safety before you travel. Service your vehicle, tyres and trailer. Check the safety of any load or trailer:
www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/safety-rules/road-rules/towing.html.
Tip#18: If you are going on a road trip, secure any pet with a dog belt/pet cage/seat belt. Plan entertainment for any children so they are not a distraction to the driver. Stay hydrated and get fresh air. Check your route. Plan frequent rest stops. Swap drivers regularly.
