SSI Impact: News from our journey to 2040
Happy holidays from SSI!
As the end of year approaches it’s time for some reflection on what has happened over the past 12 months. 2019 has been a jam-packed year for SSI, with many a milestone to celebrate and some new and exciting challenges emerging on the horizon.

We also welcomed a new SSI member: Welcome South32!

We raise a glass to our SSI family (that means YOU!) to thank you for your collaboration and to celebrate our collective achievements, while recharging our batteries for the new year. See you in 2020!

OCEANS
Proactively contributing to the responsible governance of the oceans
Our Oceans, Our Future. SSI member and trustee Lloyds Register collaborates with industry and academia partners to drive ocean industries towards a cleaner more sustainable future as the shipping industry addresses the challenges of decarbonisation.
COMMUNITIES
Earning the reputation of being a trusted and responsible partner in the communities where we live, work and operate
Human rights and the business of shipping. The maritime industry is responsible for ensuring human rights are observed across the entire shipping value chain through global instruments such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights. Read about what SSI member Luis Dreyfus Company is doing in advancing human rights observance across supply chains and why they signed up the SRTI.
CAREERS
Provide healthy, safe and secure work environments so that people want to work in shipping, where they can enjoy rewarding careers and achieve their full potential
From navigating officer cadet to sustainability A-lister. SSI member and trustee Simon Bennett, General Manager-Sustainable Development at the China Navigation Company has been recognised as one of Asia Pacific's most influential corporate sustainability leaders in Eco-Business' A-list. TRANSPARENCY
Transparency and accountability drive performance improvements and enable better, sustainable decision making
India accedes to the HKC. On 28 November India acceded to the Hong Kong Convention on ship recycling, fulfilling the criteria for the number of States required; however, more tonnage and recycling volumes are needed before the Convention can enter into force.

The SRTI online platform turns one. It’s been a year since the SRTI online platform went live. In Q1 we’ll be hosting a roundtable on ship recycling in London on 5 March 2020, during which the annual SRTI report will be launched.
If you haven’t already, sign up to the SRTI so your data can be included.
FINANCE
Develop financial solutions that reward sustainable performance and enable large scale uptake of innovation, technology, design and operational efficiencies
The sustainable finance movement is growing. Standard Chartered Bank supports sustainable finance by mapping their business against the SDGs to create a green and sustainable product framework that sets out the sustainable activities it finances. More on SCB’s sustainable finance work including in shipping here.
ENERGY
Change to a diverse range of energy sources, using resources more efficiently and responsibly, and dramatically reducing greenhouse gas intensity

SSI report on biofuels for shipping launched at COP25.
On 11 December SSI launched the report The Role of Sustainable Biofuels in the Decarbonisation of Shipping: The findings of an inquiry into the sustainability and availability of biofuels for shipping at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP25) in Madrid, with SSI members WWF and the China Navigation Company presenting at the event. Watch the video recording or read the press release of the report launch at COP25.

SSI shares stakeholder perspectives on biofuels with IMO. SSI members Lloyds Register and WWF shared findings and received feedback from IMO's Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships (ISWG-GHG 6) on the findings of SSI’s inquiry pre-launch at COP25.

Roadmap for a sustainable bioeconomy. SSI sparred with aviation peers at IATA and EDF while offering a sneak peak at the findings of our biofuels inquiry during the session ‘Turning the Tide: The Route to Sustainability for Shipping’ at the annual meeting of the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB).
