HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Illuminating the Neighborhood

I was elated to be asked to turn on the lights at the Sauganash Holiday Lighting Ceremony.

We kicked off the season by lighting up the business district at the Polish National Alliance. Thank you to the business owners in the Sauganash SSA who had the vision for and invested in these lights, especially Commissioners Smith, Klairmont, Jimenez, Jardien, and Tarpey.

Thanks to the wonderful staff at the PNA for hosting this delightful holiday tradition. Big shout out to The Sauganash Singers from Sauganash Elementary School, led by their director, Sandra Serna.
What a delight to participate in the Edgebrook Community Association Tree Lighting. These lights put the whole neighborhood in the holiday spirit.

How exciting to be a part of the lighting of the lovely Chopin Plaza with neighbors and friends.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Community Highlights

The Edgebrook Holiday Stroll & Cookie Walk showcased #39thWard small businesses doing wonderful things for our community.

Thank you to Interim Executive Director Christy Beigh-Byrne of the Albany Park Community Center for visiting us in our new office. We are so thrilled about all of the new programs APCC is offering.

Thank you to the Sauganash Community Association for having me at your annual Holiday Dinner! I respect the work this group has done to organize, beautify, and celebrate the northwest side–since 1924!

I always have so much fun attending Queen of All Saints's annual Christmas sale. Thank you for making my holiday shopping easier!

I enjoyed being a part of the Forest Glen Cookie Exchange. (Can you tell I love cookies or what?)

Thank you to the Old Irving Park community for inviting me to their Holiday Party. Not only were we celebrating the holiday season, but they were collecting unwrapped gifts for the Irving Park Food Pantry. I’m always so inspired by the generosity of our residents during this season of giving.

We are so proud to work with the North River Commission and happy to attend their holiday party at Old Irving Brewery with so many dedicated neighbors and community members.
Congratulations to Northside Learning Center on the opening of their new cafe: McClendon's Corner. The cafe is dedicated to former NLC principal Darlene McClendon. Stop in sometime and get a morning coffee or pastry! 3730 W Bryn Mawr Ave.
I had a great time attending A Latin Jazz Christmas featuring the Luciano Antonio Trio. The trio performed a Latin-influenced Christmas program as well as Brazilian and Latin standards.

Thank you to the Irving Park Fine Arts Committee and Irving Park Lutheran Church.
I absolutely loved spending time at the Queen of All Saints Filipino Community Party!
I was able to attend a performance of the Albany Park Theater Project's Port of Entry.

Port of Entry invites you inside the stories of immigrants from around the world as they forge new lives, within the walls of a single apartment building in Chicago’s Albany Park, one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country.

At this time of heightened nativism and xenophobia, Port of Entry inspires empathy and mutual understanding by immersing audiences in a world where teens from immigrant and first-generation homes share the stories of displaced people from all over the world surviving—and thriving—together.

2020 CENSUS

Partnering for an Accurate Count

Chicago Mayor's Office has announced a strategic initiative to distribute $500,000 in funding for community-based organizations to assist the City in educating and engaging residents about the upcoming 2020 U.S. Census.

Working in partnership with Forefront’s IL Count Me In 2020 program, the City will allocate grant funding to several community organizations to support an effective and comprehensive census outreach strategy focused on ensuring a complete and accurate count.

These grant funds will be used to support targeted community outreach and other initiatives to help increase participation for historically-undercounted communities.

CITY SERVICES

Yard Waste Collection

The City of Chicago coordinates bagged leaf and other yard waste collection to assist residents in clearing their yards, parkways and storm drains of leaf debris.

Please call our office, 773.736.5594 or call 311 to request a separate yard waste collection.

Yard waste should be left in the alley or at the curb for collection, and bagged separately from garbage in the black cart and separately from recycling in the blue.

Yard waste bags will be collected based on 311 requests and then taken to be composted.

Yard waste consists of leaves, grass clippings, branches, brush, clippings from shrubbery, and garden waste. Yard waste does not include dirt, rocks, or gravel.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR SPOTLIGHT

Meet Chris Gamble

Solomon Elementary School Principal Chris Gamble is a 2019 Principal Fellow with The Chicago Public Education Fund.

He meets with Chicago Public Schools CEO Dr. Janice Jackson monthly on a policy project for the district, as well receiving professional development sessions with Kellogg School of Management faculty at Northwestern University.

We are fortunate that the students and faculty of Solomon have Mr. Gamble as a leader. Just one example of the quality educators in our #39thWard.
