The New Environment Bill: A 'Green Step' in the Right Direction?

Now the election chaos and uncertainty has settled and Brexit appears assured (for better or worse), the delayed new Environment Bill for the post-Brexit era is fast approaching Royal Assent.

The new Environment Bill has been hailed as the single greatest overhaul to environmental protection in over 20 years and it is on track to set into law several mechanisms to achieve ambitious goals.  These include steering Britain towards a net zero carbon economy, reducing small particulate matter in emissions, ensuring polluters pay towards the cost of the disposal of product packaging, and restoring our designated sites and habitats post development under the Net Gain strategy.

Defra's Metric 2.0

Biodiversity Net Gain post development will soon be mandated.  The new biodiversity metric 2.0 will supersede and replace the earlier 2012 version.  It will be used to calculate a biodiversity base-line and forecast losses and gains (on or off-site) resulting from management changes or development.

Consultation on the new Defra 2.0 Metric will remain open until February 2020.  There are approximately thirty questions within the consultation.  Responses to these questions will inform the structure or format of the finalised version.  Click here to have your say.
